{"id":180,"date":"2012-01-17T09:00:43","date_gmt":"2012-01-17T14:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=180"},"modified":"2012-01-06T00:23:44","modified_gmt":"2012-01-06T05:23:44","slug":"red-velvet-cake-an-american-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/red-velvet-cake-an-american-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Velvet Cake &#8211; An American Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was discussing what constitutes &#8220;American food&#8221; with a friend recently and we were trying to come up with some foods that are truly American.\u00a0 This is harder to do than you would think given that the United States is such a melting pot of culture and food.\u00a0 So many foods that we Americans think of as &#8220;American food&#8221;, actually originated somewhere else and were brought here through immigration.\u00a0 Red velvet cake though is one food that is truly American.\u00a0 This cake is often considered a classic Southern American dessert.\u00a0 The following video gives direction on how to make this American dessert and at the end of the video there is a brief discussion of the history of this cake.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve included here the recipe from the video and I have written out the steps that are described in the video so you can test your listening skills.\u00a0 You can read the written directions if you don&#8217;t understand anything in the video.\u00a0 Enjoy!\u00a0 This is one of my favorite desserts.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Make Red Velvet Cake\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2PCZkpF1_wU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Red Velvet Cake Recipe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><br \/>\n2 1\/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted*<br \/>\n1 teaspoon salt<br \/>\n2 Tablespoons cocoa powder<br \/>\n2 ounces red food coloring<br \/>\n2 sticks unsalted butter (divided for cake batter and frosting)<br \/>\n1 1\/2 cups sugar<br \/>\n2 eggs<br \/>\n1 cup buttermilk<br \/>\n3 teaspoons vanilla extract (divided for cake batter and frosting)<br \/>\n1 teaspoon baking soda<br \/>\n1 teaspoon white vinegar<br \/>\n2x 16 once cream cheese, softened<br \/>\n2 cups powdered sugar<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong><br \/>\nPreheat the oven to 350 degrees.\u00a0 Grease and flour the cake pans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong><br \/>\nCombine shifted flour and salt in a bowl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong><br \/>\nPut the cocoa powder into a small bowl, and the red food coloring, and whisk it until smooth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4<\/strong><br \/>\nIn a large bowl beat one stick of butter and sugar by hand or with a mixer until fluffy.
