{"id":1920,"date":"2012-08-20T09:05:04","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T13:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=1920"},"modified":"2012-08-19T20:59:07","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T00:59:07","slug":"new-words-in-the-merriam-webster-dictionary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/new-words-in-the-merriam-webster-dictionary\/","title":{"rendered":"New words in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year the publishers of the Merriam-Webster add new words to their printed dictionary.\u00a0 The new words being added this year come out tomorrow!\u00a0 This year they are adding 100 new words to the dictionary that they have been tracking and gathering evidence on related to usage over several years.\u00a0 A word has to be commonly used across many areas of the English-speaking world before it becomes part of a printed dictionary.\u00a0 Colloquial or regionally used words often do not make the cut, but words that have been around for many years and words that are being used by speakers young and old, and living in diverse areas, do get added to the dictionary eventually.\u00a0 On-line dictionaries often already have words that are new to the English language, but printed dictionaries usually take more time to add them.<\/p>\n<p>So, what are some of the new words that are making their debut in the printed <em>Merriam-Webster&#8217;s Collegiate Dictionary<\/em> this year?
