Take a look at this definition of the word hyphen to get a better idea of what a hyphen is and how it is used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>hyphen<\/strong>: a punctuation mark that is used between some compound words or between the syllables of one word that has to be divided between lines of text, with part of the word on one line of text and the rest of the word on the following line of text.<\/p>\n<p>Using a hyphen to separate a word because you have run out of room to write the full word on a line of text is pretty straightforward.\u00a0 You always separate a word with a hyphen between two syllables.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you know when to use a hyphen in a compound word or between two related words?\u00a0 This is a very good question and the one that I am going to answer in the remainder of this post!<\/p>\n<p>Here are some basic rules for how to use a hyphen between words:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Always use a hyphen when writing compound numbers.<\/strong><br \/>\nExamples:<br \/>\n<em>twenty-one <\/em><br \/>\n<em>fifty-two <\/em><br \/>\n<em>seventy-seven<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Always use a hyphen with words beginning with these prefixes: ex-, self-, or all-.<\/strong><br \/>\nExamples:<br \/>\n<em>ex-wife <\/em><br \/>\n<em>self-centered <\/em><br \/>\n<em>all-inclusive<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Use a hyphen when two or more adjectives that come before a noun act as one idea.<\/strong><br \/>\nExamples:<br \/>\n<em>First-class<\/em> decisions require <em>clear-headed<\/em> thinking.<br \/>\nShe is a <em>well-respected<\/em> teacher.<br \/>\nMy friends just build a new <em>four-bedroom<\/em> house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use hyphens in expressions where words have become linked by commonly being used together to express one idea.<\/strong><br \/>\nExample:<br \/>\n<em>merry-go-round <\/em><br \/>\n<em>mother-in-law <\/em><br \/>\n<em>up-to-date<\/em><br \/>\n(Sadly, the words that require hyphens, like these, are words you are just going to have to memorize over time.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not use a hyphen after an adverb ending with -ly.<\/strong><br \/>\nExamples:<br \/>\nA carefully planned surprise party is necessary to have a real surprise.<br \/>\nA fully automated phone system is not very helpful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not use a hyphen in a phrase using a comparative or superlative adjective.<\/strong><br \/>\nExamples:<br \/>\nEven the best laid plans often don\u2019t work out the way you want them to.<br \/>\nThe restaurant may succeed, but a more likely outcome is it will fail.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this hyphen review has been helpful.\u00a0 Please ask any questions you have about using hyphens in the comments section.\u00a0 Until next time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"125\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2013\/01\/hyphen-350x125.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2013\/01\/hyphen-350x125.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2013\/01\/hyphen.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>A hyphen (\u2014) can often be found between and in the middle of words in English.
