In fact, if you are reading this blog post you are using social media right now. I hope the terms listed below are helpful to you in better understanding and navigating social media in English. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>General terms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>chat<\/strong> \u2013 communicating in real-time through computers or smart phones, by writing messages back-and-forth, this is communication involving two or more people<\/p>\n<p><strong>chat room<\/strong> \u2013 an\u00a0 area within a website where \u2018chats\u2019 happen<\/p>\n<p><strong>emoticon<\/strong> \u2013 a pictorial representation of a facial expression, which is used in writing to help the reader of a message know the writer\u2019s emotions, for example \ud83d\ude42 or :-\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>messaging\/instant messaging\/IM<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 this is like chatting, but is on-line communication, generally only between two people and sometimes this is not done in real-time<\/p>\n<p><strong>URL<\/strong> \u2013 this stands for Unique Resource Locator; it is the technical term for a web address like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\">http:\/\/www.transparent.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>viral\/to go viral<\/strong> \u2013 anything that is shared in social networks (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) and gets passed along to many people very rapidly it viral, to go viral is verb to talk about this happening, for example: This Transparent Language blog post has gone viral!<\/p>\n<p><strong>wiki<\/strong> \u2013 a web page, or group of pages, that can be edited or changed by a group of people, a web page with many contributors who are not paid for their contributions<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blog related:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>blog<\/strong> &#8211; a personal or professional website which is updated on a regular basis with an individual\u2019s or company\u2019s thoughts\/ideas\/opinions and\/or educational information (<em>You are reading a blog right now!<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>blogosphere<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 the entire world of blogs on-line and the conversations or information sharing taking place within the blogs<\/p>\n<p><strong>comments<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 most blogs allow readers to add their own thoughts or opinions, by leaving comments; this is a way of giving feedback to the writer of the blog<\/p>\n<p><strong>subscribe<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; this is like becoming a fan or a member of a blog; subscribing allows a person to be notified when new blog posts are written, it is the on-line equivalent of signing up for a magazine<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook related:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>meme<\/strong> \u2013 this is the name of a pictures that also has writing or a message on the picture; these are often shared on Facebook (often abbreviated FB); this term also means any idea, style or action which spreads through mimicry.<br \/>\nThis is a meme from Facebook:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<strong>like<\/strong>\u2019 \u2013 this is exactly what it says, if you \u2018like\u2019 something on Facebook, by clicking the \u2018like\u2019 button, it means you like it; you can \u2018unlike\u2019 something you have previously liked, but you cannot \u2018dislike\u2019 on Facebook<\/p>\n<p><strong>news feed<\/strong> \u2013 on Facebook this is the center column of a person\u2019s home page; it is constantly updating with new stories and information, pictures, and events from friends.<br \/>\nIf you \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/learn.english.language\">Like<\/a>\u2019 Transparent Language at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/learn.english.language\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/learn.english.language<\/a> then we will appear on your news feed!<\/p>\n<p><strong>tag<\/strong> \u2013 this is the action of attaching a person\u2019s name to a picture of them on Facebook; for example, someone might say to you \u201ctag me in that photo on Facebook\u201d, by this they mean \u2018add my name to that picture so other people can see this picture of me on Facebook\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twitter related:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>hashtag<\/strong> \u2013 a word or group of words that starts with\u00a0 number sign (#) and is used to group together similar ideas and topics;
