There are many traditional foods cooked and served on Thanksgiving Day in America, including: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and green beans. Even though these are some of the most traditional Thanksgiving Day foods, people around the United States eat different foods on this holiday, based on their cultural background. People of Italian descent often have Italian food along with some turkey, and people of Mexican descent often have Mexican food along with other classic Thanksgiving Day foods, and so on. But there is one food that you are likely to find at almost every Thanksgiving Day table in this country, and that is pumpkin pie!

Pumpkin pie (which is in the picture just above) is the most traditional Thanksgiving Day dessert and it isn’t hard to make! Below I have a recipe for pumpkin pie you can try to make. If you don’t have pumpkin available, you can make a very similar tasting pie with any orange squash, like butternut squash. It is really the spices in this pie that give it most of its flavor, not the pumpkin. The spices in the pie include: cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. These spices are also used in making pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, and most “pumpkin” flavored fall treats. For this reason some people call them “fall spices” in the United States.

Here is the recipe for pumpkin pie.

Ingredients:

3 eggs
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 cups pumpkin puree

How to make the pie:
1.
