I did at least, and I hated them, spelling has never been my strong suit*.\u00a0 And unfortunately, I continue to make frequent spelling mistakes in my writing today. Part of the reason for this is that English has words that aren\u2019t spelled the way they sound, which makes spelling tricky.<\/p>\n<p>So, today I thought we would all practice our spelling with a spelling test. This is a bit more advanced than your spelling tests were in elementary school, as you will have to guess what the word is first, then spell it correctly. Give it a try. It is also the shortest month of the year and the month when we celebrate Valentine\u2019s Day in the United States. Hint: There is a sneaky \u2018r\u2019 in this word.<\/p>\n<p>4. _________________<br \/>\nThis word designates a military rank for a senior commissioned officer. Even though hearing the word probably won\u2019t help you spell it correctly take a listen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/audio.php?file=colone01&amp;word=colonel&amp;text=\\%3Cspan%20class%3D%22unicode%22%3E%CB%88%3C%2Fspan%3Ek%C9%99r-n%3Csup%3E%C9%99%3C%2Fsup%3El\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>5. __________________<br \/>\nThis is the word for a long, thin, green summer vegetable. Part of the reason this word is spelled funny in English is because we took the spelling straight from Italian!
