To help us <em>ring in the New Year<\/em>, today I am going to present some English idioms\/expressions with the word \u201cnew\u201d in them.<\/p>\n<p>First though, let me tell you about the expression \u201c<em>ring in the new year<\/em>.\u201d The expression \u2018ring in the new year\u2019 means to celebrate the beginning of the New Year. The expression comes from the tradition of ringing bells around towns on midnight of December 31st. Here is a verse from a poem about this custom:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ring out the old, ring in the new, \u2028Ring, happy bells, across the snow;\u2028 The year is going, let him go;\u2028 Ring out the false, ring in the true.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here is how you would use this expression in a sentence:<br \/>\n<em>How do you plan to ring in the new year?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now to our idioms with the word \u201cnew\u201d in them:<\/p>\n<p><strong>a new lease on life<\/strong> \u2013 This expression refers to having a new opportunity to be successful or happy, after having experienced some difficulties.<br \/>\nExample: My grandfather has <em>a new lease on life<\/em> since recovering from his heart surgery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(as) good as new<\/strong> \u2013 This means that something is in very good condition or is like new even though it is not new and may have been broken in the past.<br \/>\nExample: My car is <em>as good as new<\/em> since I took it to get tuned up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>the new kid on the block<\/strong> \u2013 This refers to a person (not just a child) who is new to a place .<br \/>\nExample: Who is <em>the new kid on the block<\/em> and why is he taking over like he is the boss?<\/p>\n<p><strong>you can\u2019t teach an old dog new tricks<\/strong> \u2013 This idiom is a nice way of saying\u00a0 that a person is used to doing things a certain way and may have trouble changing.<br \/>\nExample: I haven\u2019t been in school for 10 years, I can\u2019t start to learn a new language now, you just <em>can\u2019t teach an old dog new tricks<\/em>.<br \/>\n(P.S. This isn\u2019t true, anyone can learn a new language!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>new blood<\/strong> \u2013 This expression refers to a new person, usually a new member of a team or group.<br \/>\nExample: The coach decided to bring in some <em>new blood<\/em>, because the team wasn\u2019t doing well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>break new ground<\/strong> \u2013 This expression is used when talking about a person being a pioneer or doing something that no one else has done.<br \/>\nExample: The team is <em>breaking new ground<\/em> in cancer research, they may even find a cure for cancer soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Happy New Year everyone!
