By the end of this post all of these phrases should be music to your ears.<\/p>\n<p><strong>for a song<\/strong> \u2013 very cheaply<br \/>\nExample: I bought my new desk <em>for a song<\/em> at the furniture sale. You will never believe how little I paid for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to set something to music<\/strong> \u2013 to write a piece of music to accompany a set of words<br \/>\nExample: Colin asked his musician friend <em>to set his poem to music<\/em> so he could sing it to his girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>music to my ears<\/strong> \u2013 good news; something good to hear<br \/>\nExample: Hearing that you will be coming to visit for 2 weeks is <em>music to my ears<\/em>. I can\u2019t wait until you get here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>elevator music<\/strong> \u2013 music that is calm\/relaxing; music that is usually played in public places like on the elevator, at the doctor\u2019s office, etc.<br \/>\nExample: There is always <em>elevator music<\/em> playing in the lobby of the hotel, although the patrons like it, the employees get tired of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to face the music<\/strong> \u2013 to receive punishment; to accept the unpleasant results of one&#8217;s actions<br \/>\nExample: After robbing 10 banks, the thief finally had <em>to face the music<\/em> and receive his punishment of 25 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to play it by ear<\/strong> \u2013 to decide how to deal with a situation as it happens, rather than planning out what you will do ahead of time<br \/>\nExample: I\u2019m not sure if I am going to go to the party tonight, I think I\u2019ll just <em>play it by ear<\/em> and see how I am feeling later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>jam session<\/strong> \u2013 when musicians play improvised music; playing music with others without preparation or a specific arrangement<br \/>\nExample: Every Tuesday night there is a <em>jam session<\/em> at my house with my closest friends, sometimes the music can get really loud.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to ring a bell<\/strong> \u2013 something that seems\/sounds familiar<br \/>\nExample: I thought that your name <em>rang a bell<\/em> when I heard the teacher call roll, you were in my English class two years ago weren\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>to change your tune<\/strong> \u2013 to change ones mind; to have a change of heart; to change one\u2019s manner of interacting<br \/>\nExample: The employee was acting very rude to the customers until the manager came over, then she <em>changed her tune<\/em> and was very nice to everyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>chin music<\/strong> \u2013 meaningless talk or conversation<br \/>\nExample: Whenever those two old friends get together, you can be sure there will be plenty of <em>chin music<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"195\" height=\"350\"
