Did I scare you? Probably not, but I\u2019m sure there is something out there that does scare you.\u00a0 What is it?<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s post is all about being scared and what causes people to be scared.\u00a0 To start out take a look at all these synonyms for the word scared:<\/p>\n<p><strong>frightened, afraid, fearful, startled, alarmed, intimidated, terrified, horrified, fear-stricken<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are also a number of phrases we use in English to describe a person who is scared, these include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>scared out of one\u2019s wits, frightened to death, full of fear, and scared sh*tless<\/strong> (this last one should only be used with people you know well as it includes a swear word).<\/p>\n<p>Now that you know a lot of new ways to talk about a person who is scared let me teach you the English names for some common fears or phobias. <em>A phobia is a very strong fear that lasts over a period of time<\/em>. You may notice that most of these English words for fears are based on the Latin words that the fears represent. These words are just some of the many examples of how Latin has influenced English.<\/p>\n<p><strong>arachnophobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of spiders<br \/>\n<strong>ophidiophobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of snakes<br \/>\n<strong>acrophobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of heights<br \/>\n<strong>agoraphobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of crowded areas, open spaces, or situations that are likely to cause a panic attack (people with this fear often like to stay in their homes)<br \/>\n<strong>cynophobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of dogs<br \/>\n<strong>astraphobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of thunder and lightening<br \/>\n<strong>trypanophobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of injections or shots<br \/>\n<strong>social phobia<\/strong> &#8211; the fear of social situations and being around people<br \/>\n<strong>pteromerhanophobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of flying<br \/>\n<strong>mysophobia<\/strong> \u2013 the fear of germs or dirt<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m going to use a number of the words\/expressions from above and some of the phobias in example sentences below.<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0My sister is <strong>terrified<\/strong> of spiders. She has<strong> arachnophobia<\/strong>.<br \/>\n2)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0My dog is <strong>scared sh*tless<\/strong> every time he hears thunder, so I guess he has <strong>astraphobia<\/strong>.<br \/>\n3)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0James\u2019 doctor told him that his <strong>mysophobia<\/strong> is getting out of control as he is <strong>horrified<\/strong> by even very small amounts of dirt. It is time for him to see a therapist.<br \/>\n4)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Sarah is <strong>afraid<\/strong> of heights. She can\u2019t live in an apartment that is on the second floor, or higher, because of her <strong>acrophobia<\/strong>.<br \/>\n5)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0My teacher is <strong>scared<\/strong> <strong>out of her wits<\/strong> every time a dog barks.
