{"id":3567,"date":"2014-04-08T09:00:57","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T13:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=3567"},"modified":"2014-08-06T13:51:16","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T17:51:16","slug":"english-words-from-another-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/english-words-from-another-world\/","title":{"rendered":"English words from another world!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whether you believe in life on other planets or not, today\u2019s vocabulary is going to help you talk about this subject, understand movies about outer space, or read a science fiction story.<\/p>\n<p>So, let\u2019s take a look at some \u201cout of this world\u201d vocabulary:<\/p>\n<p><strong>science fiction<\/strong> (n) \u2013 this is make believe scientific ideas, often futuristic ideas, or make believe worlds; science fiction is often related to space travel (this word is abbreviated as \u201csci-fi\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><strong>alien<\/strong> (n) \u2013 a creature (animal or being) from a planet other than Earth<br \/>\nsynonyms: <strong>extra terrestrial<\/strong> or <strong>ET<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>spaceship<\/strong> (n) \u2013 a vehicle used to travel in space<br \/>\nsynonyms: <strong>spacecraft, flying saucer, unidentified flying object<\/strong> or <strong>UFO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>abduct<\/strong> (v) \u2013 to capture or kidnap a person against his\/her will; aliens are often accused of abducting people<\/p>\n<p><strong>teleport<\/strong> (v) \u2013 to move from one place to another instantly; often aliens are believed to move by teleporting<\/p>\n<p><strong>Area 51<\/strong> \u2013 a place in the United States where aliens are reported to have landed, but their landing is suspected by some to have been covered up (or hidden) by the US government<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crop circles<\/strong> \u2013 elaborate pictures made in crops (like corn or wheat); these are often found in England and are believed by some people to be caused by alien spaceships<\/p>\n<p>People generally imagine aliens to look very different from people.\u00a0 Often aliens are thought to be green, small or short, with big heads, and big eyes.\u00a0 Of course no one knows what aliens really look like or if there even are aliens at all.\u00a0 What do you think aliens look like?
