These are times when you will want to use more formal English, or what I call, \u201cpower English.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at how you can make your informal English more powerful for use in business and formal interactions. In all of the examples below, you will see that a simple or basic word in English is upgraded to a more formal word to make a more powerful statement. Learning some of these more powerful words will help make your English more formal for times when this is necessary.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Informal English transformed to \u201cPower English\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I got your message. \u00a0&#8212;&gt; I received your message.<\/p>\n<p>I asked for this on Tuesday. \u00a0\u00a0&#8212;&gt; I requested this on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>I need some help. \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0I require your assistance.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll talk about this later. \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0We will discuss this at another time.<\/p>\n<p>James needs to get in touch with the manager. \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0James needs to contact the manager.<\/p>\n<p>Pam has to put off the meeting another day. \u00a0\u00a0&#8212;&gt; Pam needs to postpone the meeting another day.<\/p>\n<p>Please make sure the report is turned in by 5pm. \u00a0\u00a0&#8212;&gt; \u00a0Please ensure the report is submitted by 5pm.<\/p>\n<p>Can you give me your phone number? \u00a0\u00a0&#8212;&gt; Can you provide me with your phone number?<\/p>\n<p>Let me know when you are leaving. \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0Please inform me when you are leaving.<\/p>\n<p>The other team needs to say they are sorry for us to move forward. \u00a0\u00a0&#8212;&gt; The other team needs to apologize for us to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>Can you tell me why you made this choice? \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0Can you explain why you made this decision?<\/p>\n<p>Today we are going to talk more about the up coming merger. \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0Today we are going to elaborate on the upcoming merger.<\/p>\n<p>How are we going to fix this problem? \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0How are we going to solve this problem?<\/p>\n<p>The deal has been called off. \u00a0&#8212;&gt;\u00a0The deal has been cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary of the transformations that took place in the sentences above.
