{"id":441,"date":"2012-02-19T09:00:19","date_gmt":"2012-02-19T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=441"},"modified":"2012-02-10T22:14:17","modified_gmt":"2012-02-11T03:14:17","slug":"what-is-an-%e2%80%93ism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/what-is-an-%e2%80%93ism\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an \u2013ism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2013ism is a suffix added to the end of a word to indicate that the word represents a specific practice, system, or philosophy.\u00a0 Often these practices, systems, or philosophies are political ideologies or artistic movements.\u00a0 Using \u2013ism at the end of a word also suggests the word is related to a belief (or system of beliefs) accepted as an authority by a group or school of thought.\u00a0 The suffix \u2013ism is always added to the end of a noun and a word with a \u2013ism suffix is also always a noun.\u00a0 I am sure you have seen the suffix \u2013ism on the end of many words in the past.\u00a0 Below I have highlighted some common \u2013ism words and given the definitions of these words.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activism<\/strong> &#8211; The action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change.<br \/>\n<strong>Ageism<\/strong> &#8211; Prejudice or discrimination on the basis of a person&#8217;s age.<br \/>\n<strong>Alcoholism<\/strong> &#8211; An addiction to the consumption of alcoholic liquor or the mental illness and compulsive behavior resulting from alcohol dependency.<br \/>\n<strong>Capitalism<\/strong> &#8211; An economic and political system in which trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit.<br \/>\n<strong>Dualism<\/strong> &#8211; A theory or system of thought that regards a domain of reality in terms of two independent principles, for example: mind and matter.<br \/>\n<strong>Environmentalism<\/strong> &#8211; The philosophical belief that the environment is more important than heredity in determining growth and development.<br \/>\n<strong>Fatalism<\/strong> &#8211; The belief that all events in life are predetermined and inevitable.<br \/>\n<strong>Globalism<\/strong> &#8211; Globalism can have at least two different and opposing meanings.
