This term comes from the fact that both New Zealand and Australia are countries that are located in the Southern Hemisphere and therefore, \u2018down,\u2019 \u2018under,\u2019 or &#8216;below&#8217; most other English-speaking countries. In fact they are geographically below almost all other countries in the world!<\/p>\n<p>Today, I have a list of slang (or local vocabulary) that is particular to New Zealand. If you want to learn more about Australian slang, check out t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=2462\">he post<\/a> I wrote about this a while back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>angus<\/strong> \u2013 a name for someone who has an anger problem or gets very angry often<br \/>\n<strong>buggered<\/strong> \u2013 to be very tired<br \/>\n<strong>chilly bin<\/strong> \u2013 a cooler used for keeping drinks cold<br \/>\n<strong>chocka clock<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0this means that something\/some place is \u2018crowded\u2019 or \u2018busy\u2019<br \/>\n<strong>cuppa<\/strong> \u2013 a hot drink, this word is short for \u201ca cup of coffee\u201d or \u201ca cup of tea\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>dairy<\/strong> \u2013 a supermarket, convenience store, or corner store<br \/>\n<strong>fizzy drink<\/strong> \u2013 a soda<br \/>\n<strong>hot chips<\/strong> \u2013 French fries<br \/>\n<strong>jandals<\/strong> \u2013 flip flops or thongs<br \/>\n<strong>kai<\/strong> \u2013 a word for food; this word comes from the native Maori language<br \/>\n<strong>Kiwi<\/strong> \u2013 this is a word that is used to refer to a person who is from New Zealand ( a native New Zealander); it is also the name of the country\u2019s national bird<br \/>\n<strong>Macca\u2019s<\/strong> = McDonald\u2019s<br \/>\n<strong>pissed<\/strong> \u2013 drunk<br \/>\n<strong>the wops<\/strong> \u2013 a really far away place, out in the middle of nowhere<br \/>\n<strong>togs<\/strong> \u2013 swimsuit<\/p>\n<p>Now, why don\u2019t you test yourself and see how much of this Kiwi slang you remember.
