Many English language learners travel to countries like Australia or New Zealand to learn English rather than traveling to England or America and so I thought it was time we looked at some slang from one of these countries from \u201cdown under.\u201d First of all let me tell you about the term \u2018down under\u2019, this is a way to refer to Australia or New Zealand or both. This term comes from the fact that both New Zealand and Australia are countries that are located in the Southern Hemisphere and therefore, \u2018down,\u2019 \u2018under,\u2019 or ‘below’ most other English-speaking countries. In fact they are geographically below almost all other countries in the world!<\/p>\n

Today, I have a list of slang (or local vocabulary) that is particular to New Zealand. If you want to learn more about Australian slang, check out the post<\/a> I wrote about this a while back.<\/p>\n

angus<\/strong> \u2013 a name for someone who has an anger problem or gets very angry often
\nbuggered<\/strong> \u2013 to be very tired
\nchilly bin<\/strong> \u2013 a cooler used for keeping drinks cold
\nchocka clock<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0this means that something\/some place is \u2018crowded\u2019 or \u2018busy\u2019
\ncuppa<\/strong> \u2013 a hot drink, this word is short for \u201ca cup of coffee\u201d or \u201ca cup of tea\u201d
\ndairy<\/strong> \u2013 a supermarket, convenience store, or corner store
\nfizzy drink<\/strong> \u2013 a soda
\nhot chips<\/strong> \u2013 French fries
\njandals<\/strong> \u2013 flip flops or thongs
\nkai<\/strong> \u2013 a word for food; this word comes from the native Maori language
\nKiwi<\/strong> \u2013 this is a word that is used to refer to a person who is from New Zealand ( a native New Zealander); it is also the name of the country\u2019s national bird
\nMacca\u2019s<\/strong> = McDonald\u2019s
\npissed<\/strong> \u2013 drunk
\nthe wops<\/strong> \u2013 a really far away place, out in the middle of nowhere
\ntogs<\/strong> \u2013 swimsuit<\/p>\n
