There are so many phrases, expressions, and idioms in English connected to the word \u2018heart\u2019 that I thought it was time we take a look at some them. Below I have listed a number of idioms in which the word \u2018heart\u2019 is featured. As you will see there is often a lot of emotion connected with these idioms too. I have also provided examples of use and a short fill-in the blank exercise for you to try out your understanding of these new expressions at the end of the post. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heart-related idioms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>to be after (one\u2019s) own heart<\/strong> \u2013 a way of describing someone who is similar to you or does things in a way that makes you happy<br \/>\nExample: Jill is a cook <em>after my own heart<\/em>; she always makes food that I love.<\/p>\n<p><strong>a bleeding heart<\/strong> \u2013 a person who feels sympathy or compassion for everyone\/everything, even when it is undeserved<br \/>\nExample: Kate is such <em>a bleeding heart<\/em> she takes in all the feral cats that are in her neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to cross (one\u2019s) heart and hope to die<\/strong> \u2013 this is a saying that is an emphatic or expressive way of making a promise<br \/>\nExample: <em>I cross my heart hope to die<\/em>, I will never tell anyone what you said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>in a heart\u2019s beat<\/strong> \u2013 very fast<br \/>\nExample: I\u2019ll be back <em>in a heart\u2019s beat<\/em>, I promise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to eat (one\u2019s) heart out<\/strong> \u2013 to feel jealous, angry or bitter about something<br \/>\n(This phrase is usually used when describing or talking about someone else, not one\u2019s self.)<br \/>\nExample: <em>Eat your heart out<\/em> Julie, I got the diamond necklace from mom and you didn\u2019t!<\/p>\n<p><strong>to get to the heart of (something)<\/strong> \u2013 to get to the most important part or details<br \/>\nExample: When we finally <em>got to the heart of the matter<\/em> I could understand why everyone was so upset.<\/p>\n<p><strong>a heart of gold<\/strong> \u2013 a kind or generous person<br \/>\nExample: Joe is the kindest person I know, he truly has <em>a heart of gold<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(one\u2019s) heart goes out to (something)<\/strong> \u2013 to feel great sympathy<br \/>\nExample: <em>My heart goes out to all the parents<\/em> who lost their children in the accident.<\/p>\n<p><strong>a\/the heart to heart<\/strong> \u2013 a conversation that is intimate and truthful;<br \/>\nExample: I finally had <em>the heart to heart<\/em> I needed to have with my brother about his wife.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to know (something) by heart<\/strong> \u2013 to have something memorized perfectly<br \/>\nExample: The children were asked <em>to know their telephone numbers and addresses by heart<\/em> by the end of the week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to take heart<\/strong> \u2013 to be encouraged or to be brave about something<br \/>\nExample: I told Emily <em>to take heart<\/em>; that the worst was past her now.<\/p>\n<p>Fill in the blank exercise:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The parents ______________________ knowing that their son was in a better place now.<br \/>\n2)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Shelly is such a _______________________.
