{"id":598,"date":"2012-03-19T09:00:59","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T13:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/?p=598"},"modified":"2014-08-01T16:30:50","modified_gmt":"2014-08-01T20:30:50","slug":"march-madness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/english\/march-madness\/","title":{"rendered":"March Madness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The term \u201cMarch Madness\u201d does not refer to people in the United States becoming crazy in the month of March, well, not exactly. \u00a0March Madness is the name given to the championship tournament played by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men\u2019s Division I (the highest division) basketball teams in the United States. \u00a0Because teams from colleges all around the country play in this tournament, people all around the country are often <em>very excited<\/em> about this tournament. \u00a0The tournament is played over multiple weeks, in the month of March, which is why it is called \u201cMarch Madness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, how does the March Madness tournament work?<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-eight college basketball teams play against one another in single-elimination* games to determine the national college men\u2019s championship basketball team. The tournament teams include champions from 31 Division I conferences** and an additional 37 teams which are given \u201cat-large\u201d (or \u201cextra\u201d) spots by the committee that runs this tournament. \u00a0Once the 68 teams who are to play in the tournament are decided upon, they are ranked and organized into a single elimination bracket***. \u00a0These brackets determine which teams will play against each other. \u00a0Lower-seeded (lower ranked) teams are placed in brackets against higher seeded (higher ranked) teams.
