Someone you know is having a tough time. They are sad, or distressed, or even depressed. You want to say something to make them know that you care, but it can be awkward. What are the right words? Here are some expressions of <strong>sympathy<\/strong> and <strong>empathy<\/strong> for those moments when words just don\u2019t seem right.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Illness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If a friend, co-worker, or family member is sick, you want to say something to offer tidings for better health. These sentiments will let them know that you care.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oh, no! I hope that you\u2019re feeling better soon.<\/li>\n<li>Take care, and be good to yourself.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m sorry to hear you\u2019re not feeling well.<\/li>\n<li>If you have your health, you have everything.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t worry about anything except getting better.<\/li>\n<li>That\u2019s too bad. There\u2019s nothing worse than not feeling well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Having a Bad Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes a co-worker, friend, spouse, or relative just had a bad day and is feeling frustrated and sad. They may act angry or troubled. They could be anxious and\/or distracted. You want to let them know that you care, and to give them some encouragement, so one or more of these phrases are appropriate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You know that you can talk to me anytime.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m here for you, if you want to talk<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve been there. I understand.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t let it get you down.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re strong, and you\u2019ll get through this.<\/li>\n<li>Days like this are the worst, I know.<\/li>\n<li>Try to put it behind you.<\/li>\n<li>Tomorrow\u2019s another day.<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s done is done. Better days are ahead.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re going to be okay, you know.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ve got this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Disappointment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes a friend or family member has been let down, or disappointed by something. Maybe they didn\u2019t get a job, or broke up with a loved one. Here are some words and phrases that might be appropriate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I know how you feel.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s something (or someone) else out there.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m sorry, too.<\/li>\n<li>It just wasn\u2019t meant to be this time.<\/li>\n<li>One door closes, another door opens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Serious Trouble<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Maybe you know someone who is in serious trouble, and <u>really<\/u> needs help. It could be personal, and is often very stressful. It\u2019s important that this person has some support. Give them your attention, and let them know that you won\u2019t abandon them, by saying the right thing at this difficult time. Include yourself, and others who care, in your words.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let\u2019s see if we can work this out together.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re not alone.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve got your back.<\/li>\n<li>Let\u2019s take this one step at a time.<\/li>\n<li>This is what friends (or family) are for.<\/li>\n<li>Let\u2019s roll up our sleeves and fix this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Expressions of Sympathy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>What do you say to someone when their loved one has fallen seriously ill, or even passed away? It happens to all of us, and you want to say the right thing, but words can often fail us. Don\u2019t let them! Show your support, love, and care with these expressions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m so sorry to have heard the news.<\/li>\n<li>Please accept my sincerest <strong>condolences<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>I want you to know that I\u2019ve been thinking of you.<\/li>\n<li>You have my heartfelt sympathies.<\/li>\n<li>These are difficult times, and I want you to know how sorry I am for your loss.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m sure that you have wonderful memories that you will always treasure.<\/li>\n<li>I was deeply saddened to learn the news.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Above all else, if you know someone who is experiencing a difficult time, take a moment to say something to them to show that you care.
