He’s the head organizer of the Summer Esperanto Study, which recently took place in Slovakia. I hear it’s quite different from other Esperanto events and very friendly to beginners, but yet also has a lot of activities for the fluent speaker. If I had to describe it quickly, I’d call it a cross between NASK and IJK.

[As a side note, I was recently reading an interview with Donald X Vaccarino, the designer of the hit card game Dominion. The interview is presented in Portuguese with the original English following. However, I found it to be an interesting way to practice Portuguese… then see how much I really understood in the translation. So, this time I’ll present the original Esperanto first, so try reading it and see how much you understand!]

Why do we need another big Esperanto event? Why did you decide to start running SES?

Mankis somere tempo, dum kiu homoj, kiuj interesiĝas pri Esperanto, ne nur “venu kaj amuziĝu”, sed ankaŭ plibonigu sian lingvo-konon, nivelon. Ni jes deziras (kaj laboras pri tio ankaŭ aktive) ke la aranĝo plu kresku – kaj kvalite, kaj kvante.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1705" alt="" width="300" height="225" class="size-medium wp-image-1705" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/esperanto/wp-content/uploads/sites/19/2011/09/SES_grupfoto_2011-300x225.jpg">
191 participants from 28 countries

Effectively – when we launched SES 4 years ago, we didn’t think about a “large” event. (even now – it’s not really too big – less than 200 people these last two years, before that, around 100). For a summer learning camp (even more so for Esperanto), it doesn’t seem to be that large of an event. 🙂 It certainly makes us happy, that more and more people come from different countries (this year especially with 191 participants from 28 countries). And its continual growth also partly proves, that there is definitely a need for this kind of event. We came up with the idea because of practical reasons – there was a hole for such an event in Europe. There wasn’t any summer where people could go to learn Esperanto, instead of just “having fun,” but to really improve their language skills. We do indeed hope (and are actively working toward it), that it will continue to grow – both in quality and quantity.

How many courses are offered? Can you go there without speaking any Esperanto? On the other end of the spectrum, what do you have to offer experienced Esperanto speakers?

With the growing amount of signups, we also added several language levels. This year we proposed 5 different levels as well as a seminar Flugiloj de interkultura vento [Wings of intercultural wind] in cooperation with ILEI (International League of Esperanto Instructors), whose members and board also run it). So, everyone will find something for them – whether they’re a complete beginner or someone who already wants to teach the language (or is already doing so), but needs more experience or advice. The meeting is very beginner-friendly. 🙂 We often even have a large group of total beginners (or at least people who are attending an Esperanto event for their first time). Because of that, we also translate many things to English (mostly the important evening announcements and the program, so that beginners understand practical organizational messages, etc). We have quite a large mix of people there – relating to language level, age, country. Effectively, at JES there is no age limit, so you’ll find everyone from small infants to active retired people (this year the attendees spread from 4 years to 83 years old). This age diversity (along with the others) didn’t hurt the meeting – completely opposite – one sees that many different people from different backgrounds are interested in the language.

How many people participated and what language level did they have?

This year, 191 people came from 28 countries – a record so far. 🙂 Language levels are completely different – also because we offer 5 levels during SES – often the greatest headache on the first day is to estimate each person’s level. Generally we have almost equal groups – many people are typically in the beginner group, but almost the same amount also appear in the advanced group. Because many people came through lernu.net – those people are often very strong at reading and understanding Esperanto text, but weak at speaking. The teachers had to confront such challenges during the meeting. Also, because of that, we decided to introduce afternoon speaking practice rounds, which participants themselves requested and liked a lot.

What would you say was the biggest highlight of the event?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1706" alt="" width="300" height="225" class="size-medium wp-image-1706" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/esperanto/wp-content/uploads/sites/19/2011/09/SES_junaj_vochoj-300x225.jpg">
Polish group Junaj Voĉoj performs first Esperanto concert

As for the cultural program, I certainly was happy with the great concerts – more varied and higher quality than ever before.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1707" alt="" width="300" height="225" class="size-medium wp-image-1707" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/esperanto/wp-content/uploads/sites/19/2011/09/SES_perdita_gen-300x225.jpg">
La Perdita Generacio gets people dancing

Next year we decided to organize the event in the same location – the location and city are very suitable for this event – near the city center, friendly local staff and good equipment.
