Any good Esperantist will tell you that the name of language comes from “esperi<\/strong>,” which means, “to hope.” So, what exactly are they hoping for? One of L.L. Zamenhof’s artistic works, known simply as “La Espero<\/strong>” (the hope) tries to answer that question.<\/p>\n

“La Espero” is a simple, 24-line poem written as a series of rhyming couplets in four-line stanzas. Zamenhof wrote it in the late 1800s as a means of expressing exactly what he wanted to achieve by inventing Esperanto. The poem has resounded with many Esperantists, to the point that it has become almost a hymn, or an anthem. You most likely would hear it set to music. “La Espero” is usually sung during worldwide Esperanto events, as a quick reminder why such events convene in the first place.<\/p>\n

En la mondon venis nova sento,
\ntra la mondo iras forta voko;
\nper flugiloj de facila vento
\nnun de loko flugu \u011di al loko.<\/p>\n

Ne al glavo sangon soifanta
\n\u011di la homan tiras familion:
\nal la mond’ eterne militanta
\n\u011di promesas sanktan harmonion.<\/p>\n

Sub la sankta signo de l’ espero
\nkolekti\u011das pacaj batalantoj,
\nkaj rapide kreskas la afero
\nper laboro de la esperantoj.<\/p>\n

Forte staras muroj de miljaroj
\ninter la popoloj dividitaj;
\nsed dissaltos la obstinaj baroj,
\nper la sankta amo disbatitaj.<\/p>\n

Sur ne\u016dtrala lingva fundamento,
\nkomprenante unu la alian,
\nla popoloj faros en konsento
\nunu grandan rondon familian.<\/p>\n
