Introductions are in order<\/strong><\/big><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/big>By way of introducing myself as the newest blogger for Transparent Language<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 I\u2019m Andrea and I live in northern California near the San Francisco Bay area.\u00a0 I am very lucky in that about fifty of the nicest esperantists in the world live in this area between the Bay and Sacramento. However, I\u2019ve only lived here since 2005, so I also know what it\u2019s like to be the only esperantist for hundreds of kilometers around, teaching myself from books, sending badly recorded audio tapes to people in Poland and Korea before the advent of the Internet while also raising a family and developing a career.<\/span>
\n

\nLike most modern esperantists, I have internet friends all over the world, and use the language on a daily basis in correspondence, chat rooms, instant messages, discussion fora and in coffee houses all over the Bay Area.<\/p>\n

In this blog, I would like to share with you my enjoyment of the international language, Esperanto.\u00a0 As you are aware, most people have never heard\u00a0of the language or think it died out in the 1950\u2019s, and they are amazed to discover just how much there is to The Esperanto Movement.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just words on paper, it\u2019s a living language for living people.<\/p>\n

One example of its vitality is that I recently received an email from Hungary, written in Esperanto, inviting me to join a multi-level marketing scheme.\u00a0 What\u2019s next? Cash from Nigeria?<\/p>\n

The Culture<\/strong><\/big><\/p>\n

Let’s spend the next few articles talking about the Culture of Esperanto. <\/span>What is it?\u00a0 Why is it important?<\/p>\n

I speak the English language as a native, however I was raised in a part of the world where many folks speak Spanish, but I never learned that language well.<\/p>\n

Why not?\u00a0 I studied it in school for several years, and many of my school friends spoke it.\u00a0 In my opinion, it’s a beautiful language and certainly warrants learning.\u00a0 I memorized the nouns and wrestled with the conjugations until I won, but, in the words of the\u00a0author Robert Heinlein, I just didn’t grok<\/span> the language, and I would forget it all over Summer vacation.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, when I first started doing the Esperanto thing, the language came easily.\u00a0 Yes, certainly Esperanto is the easiest language in the world to learn, but it’s still a language and I’m no linguist.\u00a0 The language wasn’t taught in any school, and none of\u00a0my friends spoke it.\u00a0 What’s the big difference?<\/p>\n

The difference is that I felt that I was a part of the Esperanto culture.\u00a0 The people and the ideals of Esperanto fascinated me, in spite of the fact that they lived all over the world.\u00a0 Wherever I found esperantists, there was the culture.<\/p>\n

Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas are beautiful and interesting, but those cultures seemed to me too far away and uninviting.\u00a0 I could never participate in this cultures.\u00a0 And since language and culture are inseparable, that was a big problem.<\/p>\n

Ronald J. Glossop wrote an article in 2005, The Culture of Esperanto<\/span><\/a>. He describes the Esperanto culture as, “\u2026 an international or global\u00a0culture. Consequently, it will have to promote international understanding and tolerance for a variety of life-styles. Esperantists have to respect the customs and languages of all groups throughout the whole world.”<\/p>\n

Esperantists can keep their own culture in their hearts, and also learn about others.\u00a0 Unsurprisingly, esperantists are a talkative bunch.\u00a0 Every year, they spend gobs of money and time to travel all over the world to talk with esperantists from other countries.\u00a0 That is the ideal of Esperanto<\/p>\n

Visit the webpage, Koresponda Servo Universala<\/span><\/a> (the Universal Correspondence Service) and read the announcements there.\u00a0 The writers “\u2026 want to correspond with esperantists from the entire world” and “very much want to get to know and contact other esperantists in the whole world.”\u00a0 These are perfect examples of the esperanto culture!<\/p>\n

“Come!\u00a0 Let’s talk!\u00a0 Let’s get to know each other!” Yes, that is the culture for me!<\/p>\n

Per \u0109i tiu blogo, mi volas sciigu vin pri mia \u011duado de la lingvo internacia, Esperanto.\u00a0 Kiel vi scias, la plejmulto da homoj neniam jam pria\u016ddis la lingvon, a\u016d ili kredas ke \u011di mortis dum la\u00a0kvindeka jardeko, kaj ili miras malkovri tiom vasta estas la Esperanta Movado.\u00a0 \u011ci nur estas vortoj surpaperaj, \u011di estas vivanta lingvo por vivantaj homoj.<\/p>\n

Jen ekzemplo de \u011dia vigleco: anta\u016d nelonge ricevis mi retpo\u015dton de Hungario, skribite esperante, kiu invitis min kuni\u011di mult-nivelan merkadan komploton.\u00a0 Kio sekvas? \u0108u kontanto el Nigerio?<\/p>\n

La Kulturo<\/strong><\/big><\/p>\n

Ni uzu la sekvontajn kelkajn artikolojn diskutante la kulturon de Esperanto.<\/span> Kio \u011di estas? Kial \u011di gravas?<\/p>\n

La anglalingvon mi parolas denaske, tamen mi estis edukita en loko de la mondo, kie multe da homoj parolas hispanlingve, sed tion lingvon mi neniam bone lernis.<\/p>\n

Kial ne?\u00a0 Mi studis lerneje \u011din kelkjare, kaj multe da lernejoamikoj parolis \u011din.\u00a0 Miopinie, tiu lingvo estas bela kaj tre lerninda.\u00a0 Mi parkerigis la subjektivojn, kaj luktis la
\nkonjugaciojn \u011dis mi venkis, sed, uzante la vortojn de la a\u016dtoro Robert Heinlein, mi ne grokis<\/span> la lingvon, kaj somerpa\u016dze \u0109ion mi forgesis.<\/p>\n

Aliflanke, kiam mi ekesperantumis, la lingvo venis al mi facile.\u00a0 Jes ja, Esperanto estas la plejfacila lingvo en la mondo por lerni, tamen \u011di ankora\u016d estas lingvo kaj mi ne estas lingvisto.\u00a0 La lingvo ne estis instruita \u0109e iu lernejo, kaj neniu ajn el miaj amikoj\u00a0parolis \u011din.\u00a0 Kio estis la \u0109efa diferenco?<\/p>\n

La diferenco estis, ke mi sentis min parto de la esperanta kulturo.\u00a0 La homoj kaj la idealoj de esperantujo fascinegis min, malgra\u016d ke ili lo\u011dis tramonde.\u00a0 Kie ajn mi trovis esperantistojn, tie la kulturo de esperanto trovitis, kaj la homoj estas bonvenemaj al\u00a0mi en la kulturon.<\/p>\n

Hispanujo kaj la hispane parolantaj landoj de Ameriko estas belaj kaj interesaj, sed tiuj kulturoj \u015dajnis al mi tro distaj kaj neinvitantaj.\u00a0 Mi neniom povus partopreni tiujn kulturojn.
\nKaj tial la lingvo kaj la kulturo estas neapartigeblaj, tio estis por mi problegon.<\/p>\n

Ronald J. Glossop verkis en 2005 artikolon, La Kulturo de Esperanto<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Li priskribas la esperantan kulturon kiel, \u201c… internacia a\u016d tutmonda kulturo. Sekve \u011di devos anta\u016denigi internacian kompreni\u011don kaj toleron al malsamaj vivmanieroj. Esperantistoj devas respekti la kutimojn kaj lingvojn de \u0109iuj grupoj tra la tuta mondo.\u201d

\nEsperantistoj povas preni enkore la propran kulturon, kaj anka\u016d lerni pri la aliaj.\u00a0 Nesurpisante, esperantistoj estas homoj kiu \u011duegas paroli.\u00a0 \u0108iujare, ili elpezas multe da mono kaj tempo por voja\u011di transmonde por paroli kun eksterlandaj esperantistoj.\u00a0 Tio estas la idealo de esperanto.<\/p>\n
