aka &#8220;La Savate&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">he martial art of &#8220;<strong>French Boxing<\/strong>&#8220;, which is also known as &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>savate<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8220;, doesn&#8217;t date from yesterday, and for that reason it belongs to the category of\u00a0<em><strong>les Arts Martiaux Historiques Europ\u00e9ens<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(Historical European martial arts), such as the 15th century &#8220;<em><strong>Jeu de la hache<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;game of the axe&#8221;), the English jujitsu-inspired &#8220;<strong><em>Bartitsu<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, or the much older Greek\u00a0<em><strong>pancrace <\/strong><\/em>(in English &#8220;Pankration.&#8221;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hqBATBlEcTA\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hqBATBlEcTA<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A scene from the 1995 movie &#8220;Savate&#8221;, starring world kickboxing champion and French\u00a0commando marine (naval commando)-turned-actor, Olivier Gruner.\u00a0The movie, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/monsieur-jean-claude-van-dammage-is-back\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Van Damme<\/span><\/a>&#8216;s shadow lingers not too far behind, is set in Texas during the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/voyage-en-espace-space-travel-from-paris\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">American Civil War<\/span><\/a>, when the French &#8220;Second Empire&#8221;, under the disastrous rulership of &#8220;Napol\u00e9on le petit&#8221; (as famously nicknamed by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/victor-hugo-on-vit-on-parle-we-live-we-talk-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Victor Hugo<\/span><\/a>), committed troops to an ill-fated invasion attempt of Mexico<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word\u00a0<em><strong>savate<\/strong><\/em> in French designates an &#8220;<strong>old shoe<\/strong>&#8220;, or even an &#8220;<strong>old slipper<\/strong>&#8221; in colloquial terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Mais qu&#8217;en est-il de ses origines <\/em><\/strong>(But how about its origins)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The earliest record goes back to shortly before\u00a0<strong><em>l&#8217;<em><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><\/em>poque napol<em><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><\/em>onienne <\/em><\/strong>(the Napoleonic era), towards the end of the 18th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some specialists trace a northern France origin of <em><strong>la<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>savate<\/strong><\/em>, mainly around the capital\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/paris-plages-2011-begins-when-the-beach-comes-to-paris\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paris<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, as opposed to the southern form of martial art known as <strong><em>le chausson <\/em><\/strong>(meaning &#8220;the slipper&#8221;), which saw the light in the city of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/go-marseilles-allez-lom-french-stadium-songs-of-lolympique-de-marseilles\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marseilles<\/span><\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eventually, both\u00a0<strong><em>la savate <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>le chausson <\/em><\/strong>techniques would merge into <strong><em>la boxe fran\u00e7aise.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SAVATE : CHAMPIONNAT DE FRANCE 2010 \u00c0 AL\u00c8S\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iXVzFYnngCM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The 2008 Savate World Championship\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the chief differences between <strong>English boxing<\/strong> and its <strong>French<\/strong> counterpart is that, in the latter version, the use of<strong> <em>les jambes et les pieds <\/em><\/strong>(the legs and the feet) is fully authorized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the eve of the so-called &#8220;<em><strong>Entente cordiale<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;, craftly engineered by Britain&#8217;s <strong>Edward VII<\/strong>, and duly executed by a rather subservient and &#8220;outclassed&#8221;\u00a0<strong>Delcass\u00e9<\/strong>, mainly in order to isolate the newly unified <strong>Germany <\/strong>and further the British hegemonic agenda, efforts were made on both sides of <strong><em>la Manche <\/em><\/strong>(the English channel), between <strong>English Francophiles<\/strong> and <strong>French Anglophiles<\/strong> to increase all forms of cultural exchange between France and Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this context of European geopolitical intensity,\u00a0a special match dubbed &#8220;<strong><em>le combat du si\u00e8cle<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;the fight of the century&#8221;) was organized in <strong>1899<\/strong> that was to determine which of the two types of boxing, the French or the English, <strong><em>est le meilleur<\/em><\/strong> (is the best.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Charles Chaumont<\/strong>, a Frenchman, faced <strong>Jerry Driscoll<\/strong>, a boxing champion listed in Her Majesty&#8217;s Victorian Navy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the first round, Driscoll complained that Charlemont <strong><em>l&#8217;avait mordu <\/em><\/strong>(had bit him), which caused the match to halt for a few minutes. Then, shortly after it resumed, the fighting stopped again for an unknown reason!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> When the referee expressed his intention to have the match canceled, both fighters convinced him that he should <strong><em>au contraire\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>allow it to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, the confrontation came to an end in the eighth round, when Driscoll was awarded\u00a0<em><strong>un coup de genou<\/strong><\/em> (a knee blow) to the stomach by Chaumont&#8212;a move considered by the English standard of boxing as illegal, since it was <em><strong>en dessous de la ceinture<\/strong><\/em> (below the belt.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Years later, <strong>Bernard John\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Angle<\/strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em>an English referee who witnessed the historical clash in <strong>Paris<\/strong>, lambasted his compatriot&#8217;s performance, adding that Driscoll didn&#8217;t really know what he was getting into when he decided to confront the Frenchman <strong><em>dans son propre jeu<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(in his own game.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A rather ironic comment, since France\u00a0didn&#8217;t know either &#8220;what it was getting into&#8221;, when it joined King <strong>Edward VII<\/strong>&#8216;s perfidious game, an episode of the &#8220;<strong>Great Game<\/strong>&#8221;
