Je ne l\u2019attendais pas du tout<\/em>\u2014I didn\u2019t expect it at all. Je vous ai propos\u00e9 le Canada, le Madagascar et le S\u00e9n\u00e9gal<\/em> (I offered you Canada, Madagascar and Senegal) et vous avez massivement vot\u00e9 pour<\/em> (and you overwhelmingly voted for)…<\/p>\n

Le Canada\u00a0!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve recognized la beaut\u00e9 du chapeau des \u00c9tats-Unis (je rigole je t\u2019aime Canada\u00a0!).<\/em> The \u00ab\u00a0hat of the United States\u00a0\u00bb est un tr\u00e8s beau pays, riche d\u2019une grande diversit\u00e9 de climats<\/strong> et de la faune et la flore<\/strong> !<\/em> This beautiful country, enriched by a great diversity of climates and of flora and fauna, is a lovely start to our tour de la francophonie.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Alors que les<\/strong> Vikings <\/strong>ont construit\u00a0un campement dans la Terre-Neuve<\/a> vers 1000 ap. J.-C .<\/em>(while the Vikings constructed an encampment in Newfoundland around 1000 AD), l\u2019explorateur fran\u00e7ais Jacques Cartier <\/strong>a pos\u00e9 le pied au Canada en 1534 <\/em>(the French explorer Jacques Cartier set foot in Canada in 1534). En 1763, la conqu\u00eate britannique<\/strong> a marqu\u00e9 le d\u00e9but<\/em> (the British conquest marked the beginning) d\u2019une p\u00e9riode de colonisation anglaise<\/em> (of a period of English colonization). \u00a0Although French rule has never returned to Canada (except Saint- Pierre et Miquelon<\/a>), the country is officially bilingue<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le Qu\u00e9bec <\/em><\/strong>est la seule province dont la seule langue officielle est le fran\u00e7ais <\/em>: Quebec is the only province whose only official language is French. Famously, their license plates read \u00ab\u00a0Je me souviens<\/strong> \u00bb <\/em>: I remember. \u00a0This is widely understood as a (ballsy) reference to the cherished French racines <\/em>(roots) of les Qu\u00e9becois<\/em>.\u00a0 La majorit\u00e9 des canadiens francophones habitent au Qu\u00e9bec (7,8 millions de 9,6 millions de francophones en 2006, d\u2019une population canadienne de 36,2 millions). <\/em>(The majority of francophone Canadians live in Quebec\u20147.8 million out of 9.6 million Francophones in 2006, of a total Canadian population of 36.2 million).<\/p>\n

La capitale<\/em><\/strong> du Qu\u00e9bec est la Ville de<\/strong> Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong> mais la ville plus connue de la province pourrait \u00eatre Montr\u00e9al<\/strong>. <\/em>(The capital of Quebec is Quebec City, but the best-known city in the province could be Montreal.) Montreal is such a great city, it deserves its own post. But for now, un petit conseil<\/em> (a little piece of advice): Mieux vaut essayer les bagels montr\u00e9alais<\/em> (better to try the Montreal bagels) que\u00a0 la poutine! <\/em> But that\u2019s just my opinion\u00a0; allez visiter vous-m\u00eame\u00a0!<\/em><\/p>\n
