Riders tend to stick together to fight wind resistance, with the best or most <em>ambitieux <\/em>riders up front. The <em>peloton <\/em>is likely to contain the riders you want to watch, even if some riders charge ahead to try to win the <em>\u00e9tape<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s not uncommon for some guy to exhaust himself biking to win one <em>\u00e9tape<\/em>, never to be seen again outside the <em>peloton<\/em>. The smart money sticks with the pack until he\u2019s ready to take over.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>L\u2019\u00e9tape<\/em><\/strong>: The stage; the leg of the race covered on a given day. <em>Le Tour de France <\/em>is composed of 20 <em>\u00e9tapes<\/em>, of varied terrain. Each <em>\u00e9tape <\/em>has a winner, who gets to start the next <em>\u00e9tape<\/em> sporting&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Le maillot jaune<\/em>:<\/strong> The yellow jersey. Awarded to the rider who wins <em>l\u2019\u00e9tape<\/em>, to be worn in the next <em>\u00e9tape<\/em>. Yellow is also the color of the Tour de France\u2019s branding (which is why it sometimes looks like a tennis competition to me).<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Le maillot vert\/blanc \u00e0 points rouges\/blanc\/aux dossards de couleur rouge <\/em>:<\/strong> The green\/ red polka dot\/ white\/ red-numbered jersey.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Le maillot vert<\/em><\/strong>goes to the best sprinter at any given time (<strong><em>points<\/em><\/strong><em>)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Le maillot blanc \u00e0 points rouges<\/em><\/strong>goes to the best climber (reaches the top of the climbs first) (<strong><em>grimpeur<\/em><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Le maillot blanc<\/em><\/strong>is for the fastest rider under age 25 (as of <em>1 janvier 2010) (<strong>jeune<\/strong>)<\/em>, and<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Le maillot aux dossards rouges<\/em><\/strong> is for the most aggressive rider in each <em>\u00e9tape (<strong>combatif<\/strong>)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>5. <\/em><strong><em>Le terrain<\/em><\/strong>: The terrain, which varies by <em>\u00e9tape<\/em>: mountainous, hilly, cobblestoned, twisty&#8230; <em>Cette carte <\/em>(this map) should give you an idea of where the geographic difficulties lie.<\/p>\n<p>But the greatest thing is, when watching the Tour de France, <strong><em>vous faites un tour de France!<\/em><\/strong>You\u2019ll tour France by bike without paying a <em>centime<\/em>\u2014<em>Le Tour <\/em>is a wonderful way to get a feel for <em>le pays<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So tear yourself away from <em>le foot <\/em>(South Africa doesn\u2019t even speak French, and Zidane\u2019s not even in the stands anymore, which was not the only reason I was watching, but still)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>and <strong><em>suivez en direct le Tour de France!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*The summer I lived in Provence, my one refuge from the heat and the French was to sit in <em>la maison <\/em>of my <em>famille d\u2019accueil <\/em>(host family) and watch <em>le Tour<\/em> with my host uncle.
