{"id":110,"date":"2009-07-06T10:16:57","date_gmt":"2009-07-06T14:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=107"},"modified":"2009-07-06T10:16:57","modified_gmt":"2009-07-06T14:16:57","slug":"french-vocabulary-phone-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-phone-language\/","title":{"rendered":"French Vocabulary &#8211; Phone Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>I once worked in a call center and was responsible for making the calls to French-speaking Qu\u00e9bec. \u00a0Although I had just graduated with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in French, I was a bit intimidated the first time I had to make a call. \u00a0I mean what was I supposed to say to these people??? And the fact that I had to remind them of their debts and their obligation to pay them ASAP was not so comfortable either.<span> <\/span>In any case, I quickly got used to making the calls.<span> <\/span>I thought I would share this experience with all of you since you may just have to either answer a phone or make a phone call in French some day.<br \/>\nSo, if you ever do have a need for French phone vocab, well, here are some ideas:<br \/>\nFirst of all, use <em>\u2018vous\u2019<\/em> if you\u2019re not sure who is on the phone.<span> <\/span>This is the way the phone was answered at my university office in Paris: \u2018<\/span><em>Central College, Bonjour!\u201d<\/em><span> <span> <\/span>Now, I find that really simple and it works quite well for any type of office really.<span> <\/span>You could say, \u201c(Company Name), Bonjour!\u201d.<span> <\/span>But, you will probably have to add who is on the phone\u2026in other words, your name.<span> <\/span>So, you could say, <\/span><em>\u201c(Company Name) Bonjour! (Your Name)<\/em><span> <\/span><em><span>\u00e0 l&#8217;appareil<\/span><\/em><span>&#8220;.<br \/>\n<\/span><span>If you are making the call from your office, you will probably want to say something like this: <em>\u201cBonjour, pourrais-je parler \u00e0 <\/em>(person\u2019s name you want to speak to)<em>\u201d <\/em>(Could I speak with\u2026?) or <em>\u201cBonjour, je voudrais parler \u00e0 <\/em>(person\u2019s name you want to speak to)\u201d (I would like to speak with\u2026).<span> <\/span>When they ask you who\u2019s calling (<em>C\u2019est de la part de qui?<\/em>), you can say: &#8220;<em>C&#8217;est<\/em> (your name) <em>de la part de<\/em> (company name) <em>\u00e0 l\u2019appareil\u201d.<span> <\/span><\/em>They might tell you <em>\u201cNe quittez pas<\/em>\u201d which means to please hold or <em>\u201cJe vous le passe\u201d<\/em> which means I\u2019m transferring you.<span> <\/span>If you\u2019re not very lucky, the line might be busy for the person you want to speak with and they\u2019ll say, \u2018<em>La ligne est occup\u00e9e&#8221;<\/em>.<span> <\/span>If the person is not there, you can ask, <em>\u201cPourrais-je laisser un message?<\/em> (Can I leave a message?) \u2026but then for the message, you\u2019re all on your own!<span> <\/span>\ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now, if you are in a private home, you can just answer the phone by saying <em>All\u00f4?<\/em> That\u2019s really simple!<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I once worked in a call center and was responsible for making the calls to French-speaking Qu\u00e9bec. \u00a0Although I had just graduated with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in French, I was a bit intimidated the first time I had to make a call. \u00a0I mean what was I supposed to say to these people???
