Last week, la France a f\u00eat\u00e9\u00a0“la prise de la Bastille<\/em>” (France celebrated\u00a0“the storming of the Bastille.”) Apart from\u00a0the symbolic\u00a0value that this iconic day\u00a0has acquired over the past two centuries, it is now important for the\u00a0French, who are still rediscovering and “debating”\u00a0their identit\u00e9 nationale<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0to reconsider <\/em>the \u00e9v\u00e8nements cruciaux<\/em> (crucial events) that took place in that year of 1789<\/strong>, and “re-integrate” them back into their true historical perspective.<\/p>\n

Far from being similar to a date de naissance <\/em>(the birthday) of Hichem -as Jennie said in\u00a0her last post, understandably because she didn’t have time to read my extra-long post, being probably busy with the celebration of her own birthday: Joyeux Anniversaire Jennie<\/em><\/strong> !<\/em>–\u00a0or even the birthday of\u00a0the authentic French Revolution, which is in fact to be traced back\u00a0to the courant of great major French\u00a0figures such as Lafayette<\/strong>, Beaumarchais<\/strong>,\u00a0and Lavoisier<\/strong>, whose lofty and determined efforts culminated with the\u00a0first French Assembl\u00e9e Nationale<\/em><\/strong> —\u00a0the 14\u00a0jullet<\/em> (July 14th), on the\u00a0contrary, is more to be viewed -just as the magnifique<\/em> Chateaubriand<\/strong> observed, as a\u00a0day marking a coup d’\u00e9tat<\/em>\u00a0againt the Assembl\u00e9e Nationale<\/em>, and\u00a0in favor of\u00a0its sworn ennemis,\u00a0namely the shadowy\u00a0group dominated by the ever-intriguing Duc d’Orl\u00e9ans<\/strong>, together with his “cohort \u00e9trang\u00e8re” <\/em>(see below\u00a0“la Marseillaise”)\u00a0of <\/em>“les 3 SUiSSES<\/strong>” <\/em>(The three Swiss: Necker<\/strong>, Marat<\/strong>, and the\u00a0Baron de Besenval<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

In other words,\u00a0seen within\u00a0its accurate\u00a0historical perspective, it is the triumph of Lafayette’s and the people of France as a whole,\u00a0on\u00a0June 20th<\/strong> (the birthday of the\u00a0Assembl\u00e9e Nationale following the historical Serment du Jeu de Paume<\/strong><\/em>),\u00a0which ought\u00a0to be celebrated as une f\u00eate nationale <\/em><\/strong>in France,\u00a0instead\u00a0of the “3 SUiSSES<\/em>” and the Duc d’Orl\u00e9an’s (temporary, of course) “jour de gloire<\/em><\/strong>“, which took place\u00a0three weeks later,\u00a0on\u00a0a July 14th<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
