The absolute first thing I did in Paris (when I got there two years ago, to spend a year studying) was work out my nerves on le chauffeur de taxi<\/em>, the taxi driver. (I wanted to know the names of all the buildings we passed\u2014\u00e7a marchait pas trop bien<\/em>. This didn\u2019t work too well.)<\/p>\n

The second thing, after moving into l\u2019appartement de ma famille d\u2019accueil <\/em>(host family) was go wander around le quartier <\/em>(the neighborhood). And lacking any better way to show my goodwill and appreciation to ma nouvelle famille<\/em>, I bought flowers.<\/p>\n

The march\u00e9<\/strong> <\/em>(market) I went to had a flower stand, where you could choose your flowers and have them emball\u00e9es <\/em>(wrapped) together. Great idea, right? Sauf si on vient d\u2019arriver en France <\/em>(except if you just arrived in France) et on n\u2019a aucune id\u00e9e comment les fleurs s\u2019appellent! <\/em>When you don\u2019t know what the flowers are called, it\u2019s that much harder to make a good impression (and since everyone loves flowers, this should probably have been No. 1 on the 8 Ways to Make Friends in France<\/a>).<\/p>\n
