{"id":14681,"date":"2012-05-25T14:37:05","date_gmt":"2012-05-25T12:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=14681"},"modified":"2017-10-20T13:02:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T11:02:13","slug":"energy-and-power-politics-the-french-vs-the-german-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/energy-and-power-politics-the-french-vs-the-german-model\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy and Power Politics: The French vs. The German Model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Don&#8217;t bury <strong>Nicolas Sarkozy<\/strong>\u00a0just yet!<\/p>\n<p>Now that <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Hollande<\/strong> is French President, he will have to answer, <strong><em>sur le terrain <\/em><\/strong>(on the ground), to some of the tougher questions raised by his ex-rival <strong>Sarkozy<\/strong> during their Presidential debate.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s pick up from the portion of the debate <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/hollande-vs-sarkozy-comics-economics-and-freakonomics-part-ii\/\">where we left it last time<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TJ3zCh5qt48\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TJ3zCh5qt48<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hollande and Sarkozy in the last Presidential Debate&#8212;Some points are still very relevant, now more than ever!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(Start from 32:15)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2666 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>L&#8217;ALLEMAGNE <\/em>(<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>GERMANY) as a MODEL<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sarkozy<\/span>:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Ok, tell me, is there a country, in Europe or the <strong>OCDE<\/strong>\u00a0[in English <strong>OECD<\/strong>], which did better than France?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hollande<\/span>:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">The United States and Germany fared much better than us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Now let&#8217;s talk again about <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/idees\/article\/2012\/03\/26\/les-accords-competitivite-emploi-ou-la-fin-du-droit-du-travail_1674925_3232.html\">les accords comp\u00e9titivit\u00e9-emploi<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (the competitivity work agreements): You talk about the <strong>German<\/strong> <strong>example<\/strong>. But in <strong>Germany<\/strong>, they have social partners who are well-respected, and a system which protected workers from being fired.<br \/>\nYour <strong>TVA <\/strong>[<em><strong>Taxe sur la Valeur Ajout\u00e9e<\/strong><\/em>, a consumption tax], which you want to introduce in October, means <strong>300 Euros less<\/strong> for a couple of &#8220;<em><strong>smicars<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; [&#8220;smicar&#8221; refers in French Slang to an employee who earns the minimum wage called &#8220;<em><strong>le SMIC<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;.] That is unacceptable!<br \/>\nConcerning the <em><strong>SMIC<\/strong><\/em>: I will make sure it is adjusted in function of growth: It will go up whenever growth goes down, and vice versa.<br \/>\nI will also lock the price of energy, especially the price of <em><strong>l&#8217;essence<\/strong><\/em> (fuel) for the first three months, and I will make sure to help the families as well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sarkozy<\/strong><\/span>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">It&#8217;s the first time in the world that<em><strong> les syndicats<\/strong><\/em> publically support a Presidential candidate. This is very dangerous: Whenever syndicats get mixed up with politics, they cannot protect the workers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hollande<\/strong><\/span>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">That is not true, because in <strong>Germany<\/strong> the <em><strong>syndicats<\/strong><\/em> are very much involved in politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>ENERGY Politics<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sarkozy<\/strong><\/span>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><em><strong>Les heures suppl\u00e9mentaires<\/strong><\/em> (working overtime) has helped the purchasing power, but you want to stop that, and instead you want to raise <em><strong>le SMIC<\/strong><\/em>. I wonder why?<br \/>\nYou said you would lock the price of fuel: But what will you lock, exactly? You won&#8217;t be locking the price of the crude oil barrel that you&#8217;ll buy. You won&#8217;t impose your price on countries like <strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hollande<\/strong><\/span>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Oh come on, you know that I mean the distribution price of the refined product: the fuel.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sarkozy<\/strong><\/span>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">But France is not an isolated island! Out of whose pocket is the difference going to be paid? There are not three pockets out there, only two of them: The pocket of the consumer and the pocket of <em><strong>le contribuable<\/strong><\/em> (the taxpayer.) To pay two cents less on a litter of fuel is equivalent to 1 billion of Euros more in deficit. How will you be able to lock the price of fuel and in the same time reduce the deficit?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hollande<\/strong><\/span>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">I will primarily target the speculating distributors of fuel. Those who on purpose keep stockpiles of fuel at a low market price, then decide to sell it whenever it is best for them!
