Are you thinking about trying to get a job in a French-speaking country? \u00a0It would be a great language learning-experience, that’s for sure! \u00a0If you are, then you will need to know a few important things about writing a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 for your prospective employer(s).<\/p>\n

1. <\/span><\/strong>The first order of business? R\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/strong><\/em> literally means “summary”, so you should never submit a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 to a French-speaking employer. Instead, submit un C.V.<\/em> (curriculum vitae). The word r\u00e9sum\u00e9 has been adopted in English to refer to job application documents, but in French the common terminology is un C.V.<\/em><\/p>\n

2.<\/span><\/strong>A proper French “r\u00e9sum\u00e9” (again, C.V.) requires a fair amount of\u00a0si<\/strong><\/em>tuation personnelle et \u00e9tat civil (<\/span>personal information). Oftentimes pictures and other extraneous information is needed more so than you may be accustomed to in other parts of the world. Examples of this are providing your\u00a0nationalit\u00e9<\/strong><\/em> (citizenship) or s<\/strong><\/em>ituation de famille (<\/span>marital status). \u00a0For the latter, you may include c\u00e9libataire<\/strong> <\/em>(single), mari\u00e9(e)<\/strong> <\/em>(married),\u00a0divorc\u00e9(e) (divorced), or\u00a0veuf \/veuve <\/strong>(widowed).\u00a0\u00c2ge<\/strong> (age) <\/em>might also be useful, or simply your <\/span>date de naissance<\/strong><\/span> (date of birth).<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

3.<\/span><\/span>The contact information part is fairly simple, but critical. A well-written French C.V. has your <\/span>num\u00e9ro de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone <\/em>(phone number) in as many varieties as possible — portable<\/strong> <\/em>(cell phone, mobile); domicile<\/strong><\/em> (home phone); bureau<\/strong><\/em> (work phone) — as well as your adresse e-mail<\/strong> <\/em>(email).<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

4.<\/span>The meat of your C.V. will include brief sections for e<\/em><\/strong>xp\u00e9rience professionnelle (work experience), f<\/em>ormation <\/em>(education background), connaissances: linguistiques et informatiques<\/em> (skills: languages and technology), your\u00a0p<\/em><\/strong>roject professionnel<\/em> <\/strong>or objectif <\/em>(career goals),<\/span> centres d’int\u00e9r\u00eat, passe-temps, loisirs, activit\u00e9s personnelles\/extra-professionnelles <\/em>(i<\/span>nterests, pastimes, leisure Activities, hobbies).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

5.<\/strong><\/span> <\/span>For describing your level of language mastery, it is always best to be honest. If you happen to get an interview, your employer wouldn’t want to be taken off guard so it pays to be conservative here. Below are some helpful qualifiers: <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ma\u00eetrise convenable, Bonnes connaissances:<\/strong> <\/em>Intermediate:<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lu, \u00e9crit, parl\u00e9: <\/strong>proficient<\/span> <\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Courant: <\/strong>fluent<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Bilingue:<\/strong> bilingual<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Langue maternelle: <\/strong>native language<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

6. I’ve found it’s useful on any C.V. to put your <\/span>r\u00e9f\u00e9rences <\/em>(references\/referees) and their\u00a0nom et coordonn\u00e9es <\/strong><\/em>(name and position).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
