Le dernier mois <\/em>(last month), many internautes <\/em>rejoiced to find here on the “French Blog<\/strong>” a list of must-know abr\u00e9viations<\/em> commonly used in les textos fran\u00e7ais <\/strong><\/em>(French SMS)<\/strong>, together with brief explanations and examples\u00a0of their\u00a0daily\u00a0use. Today, we’re going to go\u00a0encore<\/em> plus loin<\/em> (even further), and show you the abbreviations commonly used in France and le monde francophone<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0which you’re very likely to\u00a0enounter\u00a0during the course of a\u00a0normal conversation,\u00a0or when you’re\u00a0reading a\u00a0French journal <\/em>(newspaper), magazine, or when\u00a0watching a French\u00a0movie, for example.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0premiere partie <\/em>(first part) will cover the letters A<\/strong> and B<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

* ADN:<\/span>
\n<\/strong>French people don’t say DNA, but rather ADN (A<\/span><\/strong>cide D<\/span><\/strong>\u00e9soxyribo-N<\/span><\/strong>ucl\u00e9ique<\/em>.) Conversely, if you hear a French speaker say “The<\/span><\/em> ADN”,\u00a0let them know about the correct way to say it in English (It’s in fact\u00a0a very\u00a0common mistake made by French people in English.)<\/p>\n

* AF<\/em>:
\n<\/span><\/strong>Stands for “Allocation Familiale<\/strong>.<\/em>” Part of the French s\u00e9curit\u00e9 sociale <\/em>(social security), it is the equivalent of\u00a0“Social Welfare”, “Child Benefit”, or\u00a0“Family Allowance.”
