{"id":16752,"date":"2012-09-27T11:45:13","date_gmt":"2012-09-27T09:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=16752"},"modified":"2017-10-20T13:55:58","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T11:55:58","slug":"how-to-understand-french-pronominal-verbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/how-to-understand-french-pronominal-verbs\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Understand French Pronominal Verbs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><strong><em>Les verbes pronominaux <\/em><\/strong>are usually easily recognizable: They are accompanied by a pronoun which agrees with the subject.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">These <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/quickly-become-a-french-pro-of-les-pronoms-pronouns\/\">pronouns<\/a><\/strong> can be:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>me<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>te<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>se<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>nous<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>vous<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">For example, take the verb <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>se nourrir<\/em><\/strong><\/span>, which is another way to say <strong><em>manger<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(to eat), similar to the English verb <strong>to nourish, to feed<\/strong> <strong>(oneself.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You would say:<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Je <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">me<\/span> nourris <\/em><\/strong>(I feed myself.)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Tu <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">te<\/span> nourris<\/strong><\/em> (You feed yourself.)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Il\/elle <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">se<\/span> nourrit<\/strong><\/em> (He\/she feeds herself.)<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Nous <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nous<\/span> nourrissons <\/em><\/strong>(We feed ourselves.)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Vous <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">vous<\/span> nourrissez<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 (You feed yourselves.)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Ils <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">se<\/span> nourrissent <\/strong><\/em>(They feed themselves.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The previous example showed a special type of <strong><em>verbes pronominaux<\/em><\/strong>, namely a <strong><em>verbe pronominal <\/em><\/strong>with a\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">direct object<\/span><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There are other cases where the pronominal verb has\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>un object indirect.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Take for example the verb <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>se raser <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(to shave) with the object <strong><em>la barbe <\/em><\/strong>(the beard): <strong><em>se raser la barbe <\/em><\/strong>(to shave one&#8217;s beard):<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Je <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">me<\/span> rase la barbe <\/em><\/strong>(I shave my beard.)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Tu <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">te<\/span> rases la barbe<\/strong><\/em> (You shave your beard.)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Il se rase la barbe<\/strong><\/em> (He shaves his beard.)
