Last week, many families around the world celebrated\u00a0la Saint-Nicolas<\/em><\/strong><\/span>!
\nThe kids who were\u00a0sages comme une image\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(behaving very well) throughout the year were showered with lots of\u00a0cadeaux\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(gifts)—compliments of\u00a0Saint Nicolas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"photo\"The naughty little\u00a0garnements\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(brats), however, the ones who did not listen to their parents, who failed to do their\u00a0devoirs\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(homework) and so on, those earned a special visit by the very much dreaded “P\u00e8re Fouettard<\/strong><\/em><\/span>“<\/strong>, a.k.a. “The Whipping Father<\/strong><\/span>“, or “Knecht Ruprecht<\/strong>” in\u00a0Germany<\/a>! \ud83d\ude42<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although it is essentially the avatars of the same\u00a0personnage\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(character),\u00a0le P\u00e8re Fouettard<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is known under several aliases in different regions of France: In\u00a0la Normandie<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, he is called “P\u00e8re La Pouque<\/em><\/strong>“, and in\u00a0l’Alsace<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0“Hans Trapp<\/strong>.” He is also known as\u00a0“Hanscrouf”\u00a0<\/strong>in some parts of\u00a0la Belgique<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Belgium.) Further to the East, however, his alter egos enjoy a far more “sinister” reputation, especially beast-like “Krampus<\/strong>” and whatnot!<\/p>\n
