line-height: 19px;\">One such French word is *<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>PLUS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">* <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Indeed, one can sometimes hear French speakers pronounce it as &#8220;<\/span><strong>PLU<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SS<\/span>&#8221; <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">(with the &#8220;<\/span><strong>s<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">&#8220;), and other times as &#8220;<\/span><strong>PLU<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">&#8221; (without the &#8220;s.&#8221;) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">So, how to tell the difference?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>L&#8217;astuce\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">(the trick) is actually quite easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Make sure you remember it well:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you want to say &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>MORE<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, then you<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> must pronounce<\/strong><\/span> the &#8220;<strong>s<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>When you want to say &#8220;<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOT ANYMORE<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NO LONGER<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NO MORE<\/span><\/strong>&#8220;, you drop the &#8220;s.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Pronounce the &#8220;s&#8221; in<\/strong><em><strong>:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><em><strong>\u00a0&#8220;Je souhaite lire plu<\/strong><\/em><em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">s<\/span> de livres en fran\u00e7ais&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> (&#8220;I wish to read more books in French.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Drop the &#8220;s&#8221; in<\/strong><\/span>: &#8220;<em><strong>Je ne veux plus fumer<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to smoke anymore.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Pretty easy, <em><strong>non<\/strong><\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Well, there are exceptional cases to remember about &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>PLUS<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8221; in the sense of &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>MORE<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>If &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>PLUS<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8221; comes right before an adverb or an adjective, then the &#8220;s&#8221; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>must be dropped<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>You <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don&#8217;t<\/span><\/strong> pronounce the &#8220;s&#8221; in &#8220;<strong><em>Je parle plus couramment le fran<em>\u00e7ais qu&#8217;avant<\/em><\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;I speak more fluently French than before&#8221;), since &#8220;<strong><em>couramment<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; is an adverb.<\/li>\n<li>You <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don&#8217;t<\/span><\/strong> pronounce the &#8220;s&#8221; in: &#8220;<strong><em>Il m&#8217;est plus facile d&#8217;apprendre le fran\u00e7ais que le grec<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;It&#8217;s easier for me to learn French than <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/greek\/\">Greek<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;), because &#8220;<strong><em>facile<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; is an adjective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Exception made if the said <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-phrases-used-as-adverbs\/\">adverb<\/a><\/strong> or adjective starts with a vowel, then the &#8220;s&#8221; becomes a &#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Z<\/strong><\/span><\/em>&#8220;, in order to make the so-called &#8220;<strong><em>liaison<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;<em><strong>Je suis <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">plus \u00e2g\u00e9<\/span> que vous<\/strong><\/em>&#8221;
