{"id":18415,"date":"2013-03-09T14:01:51","date_gmt":"2013-03-09T13:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=18415"},"modified":"2017-10-20T14:39:58","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T12:39:58","slug":"lyons-most-famous-fountain-by-the-statue-of-liberty-sculptor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/lyons-most-famous-fountain-by-the-statue-of-liberty-sculptor\/","title":{"rendered":"Lyon&#8217;s Most Famous Fountain by the Statue of Liberty Sculptor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <strong>most famous fountain in the city of Lyon<\/strong> was made by a Frenchman whose\u00a0name is not likely to tell you much:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Auguste Bartholdi<\/strong>, originally from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/bad-boys-what-you-gonna-do-when-le-pere-fouettard-comes-for-you\/\">Alsace<\/a><\/strong> region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Doesn&#8217;t really ring a bell, <em><strong>non<\/strong><\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>His other work, however, is one of the<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0best known monuments in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Ever heard of <strong>New York<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<\/span><strong>Statue of Liberty<\/strong>, <em><strong>par exemple<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><strong>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Well, the story behind the <strong>Bartholdi Fountain<\/strong> in Lyon is not less &#8220;<strong><em>mouvement\u00e9e<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (a French way to say &#8220;action-packed&#8221;, or just &#8220;eventful&#8221; if you prefer) than that of the Statue of Liberty &#8220;<em><strong>illuminant le monde<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;Enlightening the World.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>But make that on a much more &#8220;compact&#8221; scale, so to speak.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Initially, the fountain, which has an &#8220;older sister&#8221; still standing in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/basta-with-bastille-day-why-the-real-french-national-holiday-should-be-june-20th\">Washington D.C.<\/a><\/strong>, was meant to be constructed in another French city, much to the west of Lyon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">In <strong>1857<\/strong>, when he was barely 23 years old, Bartholdi struck a deal with the city of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-pyla-europes-tallest-sand-dune-is-in-south-of-france\/\">Bordeaux<\/a><\/strong> to build a fountain in its well-known\u00a0<em><strong>Place des Quinconces<\/strong><\/em>, one of the largest city squares in all of Europe. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A rather\u00a0<em><strong>bonne affaire <\/strong><\/em>for a debuting artist.<\/p>\n<p>However, for various tedious reasons better not to mention here, the project <strong><em>n&#8217;a pas vu le jour\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(did not see the light.)<\/p>\n<p>More than thirty years later, Bartholdi finally brought his work to completion.<\/p>\n<p>He exhibited it during the <strong>1889 <em>Exposition Universelle<\/em><\/strong> in <strong>Paris<\/strong>. And\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">what a <\/span><em><strong>franc succ\u00e8s<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> it was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By then, the reputation of Bartholdi was not to be made anymore. Only t<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">hree years earlier, he had finished the Statue of Liberty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Mayor of Lyon, a fine opportunist, to put it nicely, immediately seized upon the occasion to ask the French sculptor to install the fountain in <em>his<\/em> city.<\/p>\n<p>Though a bit disappointed at first by the modest price the city of Lyon was willing to disburse for his <em><strong>\u0153uvre<\/strong><\/em>, Bartholdi ended up accepting the less than generous offer.<\/p>\n<p>He personally selected <strong><em>la Place des Terreaux<\/em><\/strong>, right between\u00a0<em><strong>l&#8217;h\u00f4tel de ville <\/strong><\/em>(the City Hall) and the\u00a0<strong>Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, <\/strong>to be the site of his <strong><em>fontaine<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of the location was probably not purely random.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">The adjacent Lyon Museum houses works of <\/span><strong>Charles Le Brun<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, namely the Sun King&#8217;s favorite artist, and maybe more significantly to Bartholdi, the teacher of <\/span><strong>Jean-Baptiste Tuby<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Lyon&#8217;s Bartholdi Fountain found its direct inspiration in Tuby&#8217;s <em><strong>Basin d&#8217;apollon<\/strong><\/em> in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/welcome-to-versailles-the-dream-of-a-french-king\/\">Versailles<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of the Greek Sun-god which <strong>Louis XIV<\/strong>, <em>&#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-roi-soleil-etre-a-la-hauteur-to-measure-up\/\">le Roi Soleil<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;<strong>,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0enjoyed comparing himself to so modestly, Bartholdi chose to feature a woman.<\/p>\n<p>The lady topping the fountain is said to represent the <strong>Garonne <\/strong>river, which crosses the city of <strong>Bordeaux<\/strong>, leading <em><strong>quatre chevaux<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(four horses) who stand for the river&#8217;s four main affluents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/03\/4646050787_b068523088-350x261.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/03\/4646050787_b068523088-350x261.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/03\/4646050787_b068523088.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>The most famous fountain in the city of Lyon was made by a Frenchman whose\u00a0name is not likely to tell you much: Auguste Bartholdi, originally from the Alsace region.
