Today’s post is plein \u00e0 craquer\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(chock-full) of French idiomatic expressions which -surprise surprise- use the word “plein<\/em><\/strong>” (full.)<\/p>\n

* Top 10 French Expressions with the Word “PLEIN<\/em>” (Full)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

10- Plein de <\/em><\/strong>(full of)<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the most obvious expression using the word “plein<\/strong><\/em>“: plein<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(full) + de <\/em><\/strong>(of ) = plein de <\/em><\/strong>(full of)<\/p>\n

\u2192 Example<\/strong>:\u00a0“Que t’est-il arriv\u00e9? Tu es plein<\/span> de poussi\u00e8re!<\/strong><\/em>” (“What happened to you? You are full of dust!”)<\/p>\n

9- En plein\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(in the middle of)<\/span><\/p>\n

Another way to say “en plein de<\/em><\/strong>” (“in the middle of”) is “au beau milieu de<\/strong><\/span><\/em>” (literally “at the beautiful middle of”)<\/div>\n
\u2192 Example <\/strong>(similar to the one with au plus fort<\/a><\/span> de<\/em><\/strong>, if you still remember from a few days ago): “Elle veut acheter une nouvelle maison en pleine<\/span> crise financi\u00e8re<\/em><\/strong>” (“She wants to buy a new house in the middle of a financial crisis.”)<\/div>\n

8- \u00c0 pleins bords<\/strong><\/em> (to the fullest, to the brim)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0<\/em>Example:\u00a0<\/strong>“<\/strong>La F\u00eate \u00e0 pleins bords<\/strong>” <\/em>(“Celebration to the fullest”) is a book by French sociologist Philippe Joron which analayzes celebrations in Bayonne (in the South West of France.)<\/p>\n

7- Plein\u00a0\u00e0 craquer<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(chock-full, bursting at the seams)<\/span><\/p>\n

Literally “so full that it’s about to crack.”<\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0<\/em>Example: “Vous ne pouvez pas monter dans ce m\u00e9tro, il est plein<\/span>\u00a0\u00e0 craquer!<\/strong><\/em><\/em>” <\/strong><\/strong>(“You can’t get into this metro, it’s chock-full of people!”)<\/p>\n

6- En plein air <\/em><\/strong>(in the open, in open air)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0<\/em>Example: “Les<\/em> th\u00e9\u00e2tres en plein<\/span>\u00a0air sont nombreux <\/em>p<\/em>endant l’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/em><\/em>” <\/strong>(“There are many open air theatres during the Summer.”)<\/p>\n

5- En pleine mer<\/strong><\/em> (on the high seas, in the middle of the sea)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0<\/em>Example: “Pi\u00e8ge en haute mer” est un film d’action qui se d\u00e9roule<\/em><\/strong> en pleine<\/span> mer<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(“Under Siege” is an action movie that takes place on the high seas.)<\/p>\n

4-\u00a0<\/strong>En pleine forme<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span> (in the best shape, “in the pink”)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0<\/em>Example: “Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais je me sens vraiment en pleine<\/span>\u00a0forme aujourd’hui<\/em><\/strong>!<\/em>” <\/strong>(“I don’t know why, but I feel like I’m in my best shape today!”)<\/p>\n

3 – De plein fouet\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(head-on)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0<\/em>Example: “Incroyable<\/em>:\u00a0une voiture l’a frapp\u00e9 de plein fouet, mais il n’a qu’une petite blessure<\/em>” <\/strong>(“Incredible, a car hit him head on, but he has only a small wound.”)<\/p>\n

2- Faire le plein d’essence <\/strong><\/em>(to fill up the tank)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
