{"id":19359,"date":"2013-06-14T13:57:55","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T11:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=19359"},"modified":"2017-10-20T15:00:42","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T13:00:42","slug":"ze-french-accent-by-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/ze-french-accent-by-accident\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Ze&#8221; French Accent&#8212;By Accident?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine if you woke up one day, only to find yourself speaking &#8220;<em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wiz<\/span> a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">verry<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">strrong<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">French accent<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8220;?<\/p>\n<p>Assuming that you are not a native French speaker, or a person who lived long enough in a French-speaking country, that would seem just impossible?<\/p>\n<p>Well, <strong><em>pas vraiment <\/em><\/strong>(not really.)<\/p>\n<p>According to many neurologists, this condition, albeit a rare one, has occurred many times throughout history, and in different parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>It is known in French as &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Syndrome de l&#8217;accent \u00e9tranger<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8220;, or &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Foreign Accent Syndrome<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (<strong>FAS<\/strong>) in <strong>English<\/strong>, and was first discovered by a French scientist in the early 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>Take the modern case of this lady, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Leanne Rowe<\/strong><\/span>, who lives as far as it gets from France: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tasmania.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tasmanian woman Leanne Rowe wakes from car crash with rare Foreign Accent Syndrome   ABC News Austra\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g-rrC93uK1k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Before experiencing a serious car crash, Leanne spoke English just like any other born and raised Tasmanian.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this condition left a deep impact upon her life.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the accidental French-accented Tasmanian lady says that she lives as a recluse, preferring to go out only at night time.<\/p>\n<p>Other people who suffered a similar experience seem to cope slightly better with this rather odd condition.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Cindylou Romberg<\/strong><\/span> has never left <strong>Port Angeles, Washington<\/strong>.
