The 2013<\/strong><\/em> \u00c9dition<\/strong><\/em><\/span> of the worldwide famous French dictionary Le Petit Robert<\/strong><\/em><\/span> surprised many this year with its handful -or make that a “mouthful”- of nouveaux mots <\/strong><\/em>(new words.)<\/p>\n

Today, we’ve selected -just for you- the Top Five of such words that officially made it into French language.<\/p>\n

Here is the\u00a0Top 5 New French Dictionary Words (2013):<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Num\u00e9ro 5<\/em> (Number 5)<\/strong>: “PSYCHOTER<\/em>“:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, it sounds like the English “to be psyched<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(about something)”, but it’s more like “to freak out<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(about something)”, “to be paranoid<\/strong><\/span>“, etc.<\/p>\n

Example: “Arr\u00eate de psychoter<\/span> comme \u00e7a, tout va bien se passer<\/em><\/strong>” (“Stop freaking out like this, everything is going to be just fine.”)<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Num\u00e9ro 4<\/em>\u00a0(Number 4): “CLASHER<\/em>“:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

If you thought that this officially new French word sounds just like the English verb “to clash<\/strong><\/span>” (with someone), then guess what?<\/p>\n

You are right.<\/p>\n

It’s usually meant in the sense of having a strong or harsh argument with someone.<\/p>\n

Example: “T’as rat\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> un beau spectacle hier, notre prof a clash\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> avec le directeur<\/em><\/strong>” (“You missed a pretty good show yesterday, our teacher clashed with the principal.”)<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Num\u00e9ro 3<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Number 3): “BOMBASSE<\/em>“<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

That would be a “super hotty<\/strong><\/span>“, a girl you’d rate a 12 on the scale of 10 (plus taxes.)<\/p>\n

You probably get the picture, no example needed.<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Num\u00e9ro 2<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Number 2): “CHOUPINET<\/em>“<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

This word has been around for quite a while, but it only now got recognition by the Le Petit Robert<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

It stands for anything that’s considered to be “cute<\/strong><\/span>“, or a “cutie<\/strong><\/span>” if you prefer.<\/p>\n

In short, anything that women would find “just adorable<\/strong><\/span>.”<\/p>\n

Its female counterpart is “choupinette<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/span>”<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Num\u00e9ro UN<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Number ONE): “VIRALIT\u00c9<\/em>“<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know what you’re thinking by now: Is there at least one word that is relatively “serious” among these newly introduced terms?<\/p>\n

The answer is, Dieu soit lou\u00e9<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(thank God), there\u00a0is one: it’s “viralit\u00e9<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

And to whom should we extend a grand<\/strong><\/em> merci <\/strong><\/em>for that?<\/p>\n

I’d hate to say, but it’s most likely\u00a0Facebook.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For example: “Regardez, mon dernier article<\/a> a<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00e9t\u00e9 d’une <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>viralit\u00e9 assez incroyable<\/strong><\/em>” (“Look, the virality of my last post was pretty incredible.”).<\/p>\n

In this context, a synonym of “viralit\u00e9<\/strong><\/em>” would be “une tuerie<\/em><\/strong><\/span>“, literally meaning “a killing<\/strong><\/span>“<\/strong> or “a\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>massacre<\/strong><\/span>“, which -perhaps fittingly enough- is yet another word that made it into Le Petit Robert <\/em><\/strong>this year!<\/p>\n

Of course, the question that remains is this one: Whatever happened to expressions such as “un franc succ\u00e8s<\/em><\/strong><\/span>” (“a great success”)?<\/p>\n

Did they fall victim to deadly viruses (yes, “virality” comes from the word “virus”) and other linguistic “tueries<\/strong><\/em><\/span>“?<\/p>\n
