But every time, I find something I need\u2026 and this week, I found a blog post!<\/p>\n<p><em>Voulez-vous \u00e9tudier ce qu\u2019il faut pour <strong>meubler un nouveau appart\u2019<\/strong>? <\/em>Would you like to study what one needs to furnish a new apartment\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cExcusez-moi, vous avez laiss\u00e9 tomber quelquechose,\u201d <\/em>said the man behind me at Ikea. (He said it in English, but stay tuned!) I turned to see what I\u2019d dropped <em>(<strong>laisser tomber <\/strong><\/em><strong>= to let fall<\/strong>, literally, or to drop)\u2014was it <strong><em>les bougies<\/em><\/strong>(the candles), <strong><em>le fouet<\/em><\/strong>(the whisk), maybe <strong><em>le panier \u00e0 linge<\/em><\/strong>(laundry basket)? <em>Non non non, mes amis<\/em>. It was a present from the French gods: somebody\u2019s shopping list, <em>en fran\u00e7ais!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>La feuille de papier <\/em>(the sheet of paper) contained just the list you\u2019d write, if you\u2019d just moved to New York and needed to furnish your <em>nouveau appartement<\/em>. <em>Lisons ensemble<\/em> (let\u2019s read together)\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>1 table pliante (A folding table)<\/p>\n<p>2 chaises pliantes (2 folding chairs)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 matelas\/ oreillers + draps<\/strong> (1 mattress\/ pillows + sheets<\/p>\n<p>1 casserole\/ 2 casseroles (1 casserole dish\/ 2 casserole dishes\u2014maybe they couldn\u2019t decide\u00a0?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 po<\/strong><strong>\u00ea<\/strong><strong>le<\/strong> (1 skillet or frying-pan)<\/p>\n<p>1 \u00e9gouttoir (1 draining rack)<\/p>\n<p>2\/3 tuperware (sic) (Tupperware\u00a0!)<\/p>\n<p>Assiettes\/ verres\/ <strong>couverts<\/strong> (Plates\/ glasses\/ utensils)<\/p>\n<p>Essuie tout (Paper towels. Ikea doesn\u2019t sell these, dude.)<\/p>\n<p>PQ\u00a0? (<em>Quelqu\u2019un\u00a0?<\/em> Can anyone explain this one ?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ampoules \u00e9conomiques<\/strong> (Energy-efficient lightbulbs\u00a0! Yes !)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 rideau de douche<\/strong> (Shower curtain)<\/p>\n<p>Entretien Belei\u2026\u00a0 (<em>Aucune id\u00e9e\u00a0!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2026Lave-vaisselle (Dish-washer\u2026)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Couvercle pour\u2026<\/strong> (Cover for)*<\/p>\n<p>2 mugs<\/p>\n<p>Bols (Bowls)<\/p>\n<p>Quelques dessins des lapins diaboliques (Oh sorry, that\u2019s not a kitchen item, but they were definitely on the list)<\/p>\n<p><em>J\u2019ai <strong>mis en grand <\/strong>les articles que je trouve les plus importants<\/em> (the items I find most important). When you get to someone\u2019s house late at night is not the time to forget the word for sheets <em>(les draps). <\/em>What are the other essential words for <em>un nouveau appart\u2019 ou une nouvelle maison? Moi, je dirais \u00abun \u00a0lit\u00a0\u00bb\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*<em>Quelqu&#8217;un tr\u00e8s, tr\u00e8s sympa m\u2019a expliqu\u00e9e \u00e7a. <strong>Un couvercle<\/strong> <\/em>is a top, like for a jar <em>(un pot)<\/em>. <strong><em>Un bouchon<\/em><\/strong>is a cork, like for a bottle <em>(une bouteille)<\/em>. <strong><em>Les bouteilles de vin<\/em><\/strong><em> ont des<\/em> <em>bouchons\u00a0; <strong>les pots de confiture<\/strong> <\/em>(jars of jam) <em>ont des couvercles.
