Like the first two,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/poetry-in-motion-a-translation-of-la-fontaines-most-famous-fable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Le Corbeau et le Renard<\/b><\/a> (The Crow and the Fox) and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/les-fables-de-la-fontaine-la-cigale-et-la-fourmi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>La Cigale et la Fourmi<\/b><\/a> (The Grasshopper and the Ant), this story centers on the (almost human) interaction between two animals.\u00a0<b> C\u2019est un peu triste<\/b> (It\u2019s a little sad), I must admit, but an interesting <b>petite histoire<\/b> (little story) nonetheless\u2026<\/p>\n<p>(The English translation is not a direct word-for-word translation of the French text, but rather an embellished version and, coincidentally, just as entertaining.)<br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>Deux Mulets cheminaient; l\u2019un d\u2019avoine charg\u00e9:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>L\u2019autre portant l\u2019argent de la Gabelle.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Celui-ci glorieux d\u2019une charge si belle,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>N\u2019e\u00fbt voulu pour beaucoup en \u00eatre soulag\u00e9.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Il marchait d\u2019un pas relev\u00e9,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Et faisait sonner sa sonnette:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Quand l\u2019ennemi se pr\u00e9sentant,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Comme il en voulait \u00e0 l\u2019argent,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Sur le Mulet du fisc une troupe se jette,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Le saisit au frein, et l\u2019arr\u00eate.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Le Mulet en se d\u00e9fendant,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Se sent percer de coups, il g\u00e9mit, il soupire.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Est-ce donc l\u00e0, dit-il, ce qu\u2019on m\u2019avait promis?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Ce Mulet qui me suit, du danger se retire,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Et moi j\u2019y tombe, et je p\u00e9ris.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Ami, lui dit son camarade,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Il n\u2019est pas toujours bon d\u2019avoir un haut Emploi.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Si tu n\u2019avais servi qu\u2019un Meunier, comme moi,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Tu ne serais pas si malade.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two mules were bearing on their backs,<\/p>\n<p>One, oats; the other, silver of the tax.<\/p>\n<p>The latter glorying in his load,<\/p>\n<p>March\u2019d proudly forward on the road;<\/p>\n<p>And, from the jingle of his bell,<\/p>\n<p>\u2019Twas plain he liked his burden well.<\/p>\n<p>But in a wild-wood glen<\/p>\n<p>A band of robber men<\/p>\n<p>Rush\u2019d forth upon the twain.<\/p>\n<p>Well with the silver pleased,<\/p>\n<p>They by the bridle seized<\/p>\n<p>The treasure-mule so vain.<\/p>\n<p>Poor mule! in struggling to repel<\/p>\n<p>His ruthless foes, he fell<\/p>\n<p>Stabb\u2019d through; and with a bitter sighing,<\/p>\n<p>He cried, \u2018Is this the lot they promised me?<\/p>\n<p>My humble friend from danger free,<\/p>\n<p>While, weltering in my gore, I\u2019m dying?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My friend,\u2019 his fellow-mule replied,<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is not well to have one\u2019s work too high.<\/p>\n<p>If thou hadst been a miller\u2019s drudge, as I,<\/p>\n<p>Thou wouldst not thus have died.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-19-at-10.22.04-350x270.png\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-19-at-10.22.04-350x270.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-19-at-10.22.04.png 605w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>Today we\u2019ll be exploring another of La Fontaine\u2019s fables, this one entitled Les Deux Mulets (The Two Mules).
