Another great fable from the illustrious Jean de La Fontaine, a fabulist of the 17th<\/sup> century. Unlike the previous fables we explored (Le Ch\u00eane et le Roseau<\/a>, Les Deux Mulets<\/a>, La Cigale et la Fourmi<\/a>), Le Lion et le Chasseur<\/b> (The Lion and the Hunter) is one of the few of La Fontaine\u2019s fables featuring actual human beings. Un fanfaron, Amateur de la chasse,<\/i><\/p>\n

Venant de perdre un chien de bonne race<\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0Qu\u2019il soup\u00e7onnait dans le corps d\u2019un Lion,<\/i><\/p>\n

Vit un berger. \u201cEnseigne-moi, de gr\u00e2ce,<\/i><\/p>\n

De mon voleur, lui dit\u2019il, la maison,<\/i><\/p>\n

Que de ce pas je me fasse raison.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Le berger dit: \u201cC\u2019est vers cette montagne.<\/i><\/p>\n

En lui payant de tribut un mouton<\/i><\/p>\n

Par chaque mois, j\u2019erre dans la campagne<\/i><\/p>\n

Comme il me pla\u00eet; et je suis en repos.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Dans le moment qu\u2019ils tenaient ces propos,<\/i><\/p>\n

Le Lion sort, et vient d\u2019un pas agile.<\/i><\/p>\n

Le fanfaron aussit\u00f4t d\u2019esquiver:<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201c\u00d4 Jupiter, montre-moi quelque asile,<\/i><\/p>\n

S\u2019\u00e9cria-t-il, qui me puisse sauver!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

La vraie \u00e9preuve de courage\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

N\u2019est que dans le danger que l\u2019on touche du doigt:<\/i><\/p>\n

Tel le cherchait, dit-il, qui, changeant de language,\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

S\u2019enfuit aussit\u00f4t qu\u2019il le voit.<\/i><\/p>\n

A braggart, lover of the chase,<\/p>\n

Had lost a dog of valued race,<\/p>\n

And though him in a lion\u2019s maw.<\/p>\n

He ask\u2019d a shepherd whom he saw,<\/p>\n

\u201cPray show me, sir, the robber\u2019s place,<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ll have justice in the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Tis on this mountain side,\u201d<\/p>\n

The shepherd man replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tribute of a sheep I pay,<\/p>\n

Each month, and where I please I stray.\u201d<\/p>\n

Out leap\u2019d the lion as he spoke,<\/p>\n

And came that way with agile feet.<\/p>\n

The braggart, prompt his flight to take,<\/p>\n

Cried, \u201cJove, O grant a safe retreat!\u201d<\/p>\n

A danger close at hand<\/p>\n

Of courage is the test.<\/p>\n

It shows us who will stand<\/p>\n
