There\u2019s a lot of English that goes beyond the scope of the common textbook, or even the common work of fiction. Many of us millennials grew up learning it, chatting and playing des jeux vid\u00e9os<\/strong> (video games) with friends. We would have contests of sorts to see just who could come up with the shortest way to say things. Not only was it convenient to save time, but it also made us feel cool.<\/p>\n

In France, the very same thing happened, and similarly continues to happen to this day. Often referred to as le langage SMS<\/strong> (textspeak) there are a load of abr\u00e9viations<\/strong> and otherwise hard to decipher symbols that will surprise a French learner when they receive their first text message in France.<\/p>\n

As an example, \u201cBojour, \u00e7a va ?<\/strong>\u201d (Hello, how are you?), can become \u201cbjr sava?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

To help you get started in understanding le langage SMS<\/strong>, here\u2019s a small vocabulaire<\/strong> to help you with the basics:<\/p>\n

tt<\/strong> \u2013 Tout<\/em> (All)<\/p>\n

pr<\/strong> \u2013 Pour<\/em> (For)<\/p>\n

koi<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Quoi<\/em> (What)<\/p>\n

jam\u00e8<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Jamais<\/em> (Never)<\/p>\n
