I have to <strong>passer les examens<\/strong> (take exams) and hope I can <strong>r\u00e9ussir les examens<\/strong> (pass exams). That leaves me quite busy, but it also made me realize just how different the grading system is here en France.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing that will jump out to an American is that grades aren\u2019t based on an A, B, C, D, F system or even a 0-100 grading scale. Instead everything is based on a 0-20 scale, with 10\/20 being a passing grade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28676\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/twenty-1124737_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/twenty-1124737_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/twenty-1124737_960_720-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/twenty-1124737_960_720-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other particularity of the French grading system is that there is a strong emphasis on the idea that \u201c<strong>personne n\u2019est parfait<\/strong>\u201d (nobody\u2019s perfect). So teachers almost never give out a grade of 20\/20! Before people start yelling, \u201c<strong>mais c\u2019est faux ! Il\u00a0 y a des profs qui donnent des 20s !<\/strong>&#8221; (That\u2019s not true! There are teachers that will give you 20s!), yes, it is true that it is possible to achieve the much desired <strong>vingt sur vingt<\/strong> (twenty out of twenty), but in general, <strong>on le donne pas<\/strong> (it\u2019s not given out), because \u201c<strong>personne n\u2019est parfait<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s another thing that will feel a little <strong>bizarre<\/strong> if you\u2019re not used to it. As a result of nobody being <strong>parfait<\/strong>,<strong> l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019une bonne note<\/strong> (the idea of a good grade) is <strong>un peu different<\/strong> compared with their American equivalents.<\/p>\n<p>In France, a 12\/20 is already pretty good, a 14\/20 is good, and a 16\/20 is amazing (18\/20 is nigh impossible). Thinking about <strong>ces notes<\/strong> (these grades) in terms of just A, B, C, D, F made me feel like I couldn\u2019t do well in France for a long time before I, <strong>enfin<\/strong> (finally), started getting used to the French grading system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le syst\u00e8me d\u2019\u00e9ducation fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (The French education system) is vastly different from the American system.
