As a coffee lover one of the first things I wanted to do after arriving in France was to, bien s\u00fbr<\/strong> (of course), prendre une tasse de caf\u00e9<\/strong> (grab a cup of coffee). I got off the plane, jetlagged and groggy from the flight, but I still had that tasse<\/strong> in my head.<\/p>\n

After making my way through Paris to my room for the night I went out in search of my perfect cup. Naturally I found un petit caf\u00e9 juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la Tour Eiffel<\/strong> (right next to the Eiffel Tower) and sat down as I glanced at the menu:<\/p>\n

Caf\u00e9 au lait<\/em>
\nLatte macchiato<\/em>
\nCaf\u00e9 cr\u00e8me<\/em>
\nNoisette<\/em>
\nCappuccino<\/em>
\nAmericano<\/em>
\nCaf\u00e9 viennois<\/em><\/p>\n

There were some things je ne conaissais pas<\/strong> (I didn\u2019t know), but for the most part the names were easy to understand. But I just wanted a simple coffee! When it came time to order, I said in my best French, \u201cUn caf\u00e9, s\u2019il vous pla\u00eet\u201d<\/em> (a coffee, please), and waited for my much desired drink to come out from behind the counter.<\/p>\n

The barista came back with my drink and put it down on my table with l’addition<\/strong> (the bill), then quickly went on to serve the next customer. \u201cHe got my order wrong\u201d I thought to myself as I looked at la petite tasse de caf\u00e9<\/strong> (the small cup of coffee) sitting next to a small cookie and some sugar. Mon fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (my French) wasn\u2019t good enough to argue about it though. I just drank the caf\u00e9<\/strong> and went on with my day.<\/p>\n

When the same problem happened again, and again, and again, I began to realize that \u201cun caf\u00e9\u201d<\/em> is not the same thing as \u201ca coffee\u201d<\/em>. Ordering a caf\u00e9<\/strong> is ordering what I would have called an espresso<\/em>! The big coffee drink that I thought of as coffee is rather hard to come by if you\u2019re going to un caf\u00e9 fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (a French cafe).<\/p>\n

Now I happily (and knowingly) say, \u201cun caf\u00e9, s’il vous pla\u00eet\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
