Fous d\u2019Avril!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Humor can be a bit hard to understand in another language, whether it&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-knock-knock-jokes\/\">knock knock joke<\/a>, or an <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-jokes-where-is-brian\/\">inside joke<\/a> that you&#8217;re not in on. <strong>Heureusement<\/strong> (fortunately), April Fool\u2019s Day exists in France. That said, it has a different set of traditions and a very different name: <em>April Fish<\/em> or in French, <strong>Poisson d\u2019avril<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The holiday is celebrated with <strong>des plaisanteries et des canulars<\/strong> (jokes and pranks), but also by trying to <strong>accrocher un poisson de papier dans le dos de tes amis<\/strong> (stick paper fish on your friends\u2019 backs)!<\/p>\n<p>The name <em>poisson d\u2019avril<\/em> comes from an old tradition dating back to 1564. <strong>La l\u00e9gende veut que<\/strong> (Legend has it that) the year used to start on April 1st, but was changed to January 1st by Charles IX. The old new year\u2019s tradition involved a gift exchange, <strong>mais<\/strong> (but) some people <strong>n\u2019\u00e9taient pas au courant du changement<\/strong> (were not aware of the change) and continued to exchange gifts on April 1st after <strong>le changement<\/strong>. Other people then used the occasion <strong>de se moquer d\u2019eux<\/strong> (to make fun of them)!<\/p>\n<p>But why fish? The old new year <strong>\u00e9tait pendant<\/strong> (was during) the end of <strong>le Car\u00eame<\/strong> (Lent). Christians would be fasting, but they could still eat fish. The joke of giving <strong>un faux poisson<\/strong> (a fake fish) began as <strong>une blague<\/strong> (a joke) on the old tradition of giving real fish as gifts. <strong>Donc le nom<\/strong> (Thus the name), <em>poisson d\u2019avril<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The tradition continues today and kids all over France will try to sneak up and <strong>accrocher un poisson papier dans le dos de ses amis<\/strong>.
