Every year, the editors of the French dictionnaires\u00a0<\/em>Le Petit Robert and Le Petit Larousse announce the new words that will be added to the next year’s edition. There are normally two rules the linguists employed by these dictionaries use in order to determine whether a new word should be incorporated: 1. the frequency of the word in question in the media and 2. whether the experts believe that the word will remain in usage.<\/p>\n

Here are ten of the approximately 150 words that were added to the 2015 editions of Le Petit Robert and Le Petit Larousse:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Vapoter <\/em>(verb) — to smoke an electronic cigarette. “E-cigarette<\/em>” has also been added to the dictionary as a feminine noun. In addition, you can use the noun “vapotage.”<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Selfie<\/em> (noun m.) — this word, familiar to all native English speakers, has been added to the dictionary as a masculine noun. Here’s the French definition from Le Petit Robert: “Autoportrait num\u00e9rique, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement r\u00e9alis\u00e9 avec un smartphone et publi\u00e9 sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux.”Poster un selfie”<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Hipster<\/em> (noun m.) — another word that is familiar to native English speakers! Here is the definition from Le Petit Robert: “Jeune urbain qui affiche un style vestimentaire et des go\u00fbts \u00e0 la fois pointus, empreints de second degr\u00e9 et \u00e0 contrecourant de la culture de masse. La casquette, les grosses lunettes et la barbe fournie des hipsters new-yorkais.”<\/em><\/p>\n

4. Hyst\u00e9risation<\/em> (noun f.) — The noun to describe becoming hysterical, a word that, in English at least, has had a complicated and troublesome history. Notice how this noun was determined to be feminine, following a pattern of making nouns that end with -ion<\/em> feminine rather than masculine. From Le Petit Larousse: “Fait de se laisser emporter de mani\u00e8re totalement excessive, voire obsessionnelle, \u00e0 propos d’un th\u00e8me d’actualit\u00e9, d’une personnalit\u00e9 politique, etc.: On constate une hyst\u00e9risation des m\u00e9dias\u00a0sur certains th\u00e8mes sociaux.”<\/em><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Capillotract\u00e9\/e\u00a0<\/em>(adjective) — This is a fun new word that draws from two more common French words: the adjective capillaire<\/em>, which means that which is related to hair, and the verb tracter<\/em>, which means to tow. This new word literally means to be towed or pulled by one’s hair, but carries the figurative meaning of being pulled along by a strong and\/or irrational force.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Boloss\u00a0<\/em>(noun m.) — This word is an example of\u00a0argot\u00a0<\/em>that has been adopted into common French usage.\u00a0Un boloss\u00a0<\/em>is someone who is silly, stupid, or naive.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0Z\u00e9nitude\u00a0<\/em>(noun f.) — the state of being calm and tranquil; in a state of zen.<\/p>\n

8. Taffer<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(verb) — another common word in\u00a0argot\u00a0<\/em>that has been adopted into the French language. This means “to work.” Here’s an example:\u00a0“Pendant un temps j’ai taff\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris.”<\/em><\/p>\n

9.\u00a0Crise de liquidit\u00e9\u00a0<\/em>(noun f.) — This phrase has come into existence following the 2008 economic crisis and means the crisis that occurs when \u00a0financial institutions lose confidence in banks or other institutions and refuse to lend money.<\/p>\n

10.\u00a0Empreinte carbone\u00a0<\/em>(noun f.) — Carbon footprint. Here’s the definition from Le Petit Larousse: “Volume de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre produit par une activit\u00e9, un v\u00e9hicule, un individu, etc. et exprim\u00e9 en \u00e9quivalent CO2 ou \u00e9quivalent carbone.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Other words that have been added, that need no explanation to native English speakers, include: troll, gif, micropaiement, motion capture, tag, barista, comics, cyberattaque, groover, and v\u00e9gane.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
