Mixing up <em>then<\/em> and <em>than<\/em> or <em>effect<\/em> and <em>affect<\/em>? <strong>Des fautes<\/strong> that make no sense grammatically, but still happen all the time.\u00a0 <strong>Ces fautes<\/strong> might be annoying, but they provide a lot of insight into how people really <strong>parlent<\/strong> (speak).<\/p>\n<p><strong>La semaine derni\u00e8re<\/strong> (Last week) I talked about the famous French <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/have-you-ever-mixed-up-there-their-and-theyre\/\">cancan<\/a>, and this week I\u2019d like to <strong>continuer \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper l&#8217;id\u00e9e<\/strong>, but with <strong>une autre faute<\/strong> that French speakers often make.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La conjugaison<\/strong> in French is one of the hardest things to master. There are so many variations of the same verb! You have to memorize <em>l\u2019imparfait, le pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9, l\u2019infinitif, le future simple, le conditionnel, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/an-introduction-to-the-subjunctive\/\">le subjonctif<\/a><\/em>\u2026 And if that wasn\u2019t enough you have to dodge <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/irregular-and-stem-changing-verbs-in-the-subjunctive\/\">tous les verbes irr\u00e9guliers<\/a><\/strong> (all the irregular verbs) as well!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cependant<\/strong> (However), in spoken French, many of <strong>les conjugaisons<\/strong> aren\u2019t as different as their written counterparts. This leads to a lot of <strong>francophones<\/strong> mistaking one <strong>conjugaison<\/strong> for another when writing.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-verbs-conjugation-i\/\">des verbes r\u00e9guliers<\/a><\/strong> (regular verbs). Take the verb <strong>parler<\/strong> (to speak) as <strong>un exemple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parler, parl\u00e9, parlait, parlez<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>infintif, participe pass\u00e9, imparfait, deuxi\u00e8me personne du pluriel au pr\u00e9sent de l\u2019indicatif<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All four are pronounced pretty much the same way: something like <em>parLEY<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regardons<\/strong> (Let&#8217;s look at) a few more <strong>conjugaisons<\/strong> that are pronounced slightly differently:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parlerai, parlerez, parlerais, parlerait, pareraient<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>premi\u00e8re personne du singulier au future simple, deuxi\u00e8me personne du pluriel au future simple, premi\u00e8re personne du singulier au conditionnel, troisi\u00e8me personne du singulier au conditionnel, troisi\u00e8me personne du pluriel au conditionnel<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All of those <strong>conjugaisons<\/strong> are pronounced like <em>parleREY<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>These <strong>fautes<\/strong> will ease the burden of memorizing the pronunciation of all those <strong>conjugaisons<\/strong>!
