I love to read. Some books have changed my life and some have saved my life. They’ve transformed\u00a0the way I view the world and the people around me, have taught me how to empathize, and have helped guide me through rough patches in my life.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And, of course, a great many of these books that I have fallen in love with were originally written in French. I’ll tell you more about my favorite French-language books below. But, first, here’s a list of vocabulary about books and reading, which will prove useful if you’re a bibliophile:<\/p>\n
un roman<\/em> — a novel<\/p>\n Un livre de poche<\/em> — This means, largely, a paperback novel. This is also a large French imprint of La librarie g\u00e9n\u00e9rale fran\u00e7aise that publishes paperbacks.<\/p>\n Une histoire vraie\/v\u00e9cue<\/em> — non-fiction. In France, it’s more common to hear “une histoire vraie.”<\/em><\/p>\n Un bouquin —\u00a0<\/em>This is the familiar way of saying “book.” You’ll hear this all the time.<\/p>\n Les bouquinistes —\u00a0<\/em>These are the antique and used booksellers set up all along the Seine in Paris. Don’t miss checking these out.<\/p>\n Une librairie —\u00a0<\/em>A bookstore. This can be confusing for English speakers.<\/p>\n Une biblioth\u00e8que —\u00a0<\/em>A library<\/p>\n Un dictionnaire –\u00a0<\/em>A dictionary<\/p>\n Une nouvelle —\u00a0<\/em>A short story<\/p>\n Un conte\u00a0<\/em>— A tale. For example, un conte de f\u00e9es<\/em> would be a fairy tale, also known as un conte merveilleux<\/em>.<\/p>\n La poesie —\u00a0<\/em>Poetry.<\/p>\n Les romans policiers —\u00a0<\/em>Mystery novels. This would be an example of a\u00a0genre<\/em>, or type of book, a familiar word to English speakers because it has been adopted into English.<\/p>\n Un\/une auteur(e) —\u00a0<\/em>An author<\/p>\n La litt\u00e9rature \u00e9trang\u00e8re —<\/em>Foreign literature<\/p>\n \u00c9crire\/r\u00e9diger —\u00a0<\/em>To write. While\u00a0\u00e9crire\u00a0<\/em>is a more familiar verb,\u00a0r\u00e9diger\u00a0<\/em>is the correct verb to use in the case of writing a longer work, such as a book.\u00a0\u00c9crire\u00a0<\/em>signifies “the act of writing,” while\u00a0r\u00e9diger\u00a0<\/em>means writing a longer, meaningful and coherent text.<\/p>\n \u00c9diter —\u00a0<\/em>To edit<\/p>\n Imprimer —\u00a0<\/em>To print<\/p>\n Publier — <\/em>To publish<\/p>\n Take these vocabulary words and try to create a paragraph of French text, such as the one below:<\/p>\n Quand j’ai habit\u00e9 sur Paris, j’allais souvent chez les bouquinistes pour acheter des livres de poche. J’aime plus acheter des\u00a0bouquins d’occasion que d’aller en acheter chez la librairie.
