Where things start to get complicated is in all the variations that are also said.<\/p>\n

J\u2019habite dans la<\/strong> rue Victor Hugo.<\/em><\/p>\n

But if you just say :<\/p>\n

J\u2019habite la<\/strong> rue Victor Hugo<\/em><\/p>\n

Un quartier<\/strong> (a neighborhood) is implied rather than just la rue<\/strong> (the street).<\/p>\n

The rules can change too if it\u2019s not une rue<\/strong> or une avenue<\/strong>, but instead une place<\/strong> (a public square).<\/p>\n

J\u2019habite place Fran\u00e7ois Rabelais.<\/em>
\n J\u2019habite la<\/strong> place Fran\u00e7ois Rabelais.<\/em>
\n J\u2019habite sur<\/strong> la<\/strong> place Fran\u00e7ois Rabelais.<\/em><\/p>\n

To make things more complicated, here’s how to say which num\u00e9ro<\/strong> (number).<\/p>\n

J\u2019habite 8 rue Victor Hugo.<\/em>
\n J\u2019habite au<\/strong> 8 rue Victor Hugo.<\/em>
\n J\u2019habite au<\/strong> 8 de la<\/strong> rue Victor Hugo.<\/em>
\n J\u2019habite au<\/strong> n\u00b0*<\/strong> 8 rue Victor Hugo.<\/em><\/p>\n

*n\u00b0 is a common abbreviation for num\u00e9ro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But not \u2026au 8 de rue Victor Hugo<\/em>.<\/p>\n

All this confusion comes from the fact that habiter<\/strong> is transitive and intransitive \u00e0 la fois<\/strong> (at the same time). That means habiter<\/strong> can convey the same meaning with or without a preposition.<\/p>\n

En anglais<\/strong>, when you want to say where you live, to live<\/em> is only intransitive. La phrase<\/strong> (the sentence) \u201cI live Victor Hugo Street<\/em>\u201d does not mean the same thing as “I live on Victor Hugo Street<\/em>“. Cependant<\/strong> (however), en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> “J’habite rue Victor Hugo<\/em>” and “J’habite dans la rue Victor Hugo<\/em>” mean the same thing! While there are small nuances with the use of prepositions it’s easier to remember to avoid them when telling people where you live.<\/p>\n
