I recently celebrated mon anniversaire<\/a><\/strong> (my birthday). I had a nice time with un gateau<\/strong> (a cake) and des cadeaux<\/strong> (presents). However, The first time I celebrated mon anniversaire<\/strong> in France, I was surprised by quelque chose<\/strong> (something) that was a little different. When I tried to find a birthday cake, all I could find was un g\u00e2teau d\u2019anniversaire<\/strong> (a birthday cake).<\/p>\n

I went to au moins<\/strong> (at least) 6 different boulangeries <\/strong>(bakeries) looking for le g\u00e2teau<\/strong>, but still couldn\u2019t find one. Even trying to find the muffin man<\/a> was useless. The right frosting covered g\u00e2teau<\/strong> with Happy Birthday <\/em>or Joyeux Anniversaire<\/em> written in icing was nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n

After a confusing conversation avec un ami<\/strong> (with a friend), I learned that traditional American birthday cakes are available in France, but they usually need to be special ordered in advance, parce que<\/strong> (because) it\u2019s not the standard g\u00e2teau d\u2019anniversaire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

En fait<\/strong> (in fact), there is no real standard, any cake can be un g\u00e2teau d’anniversaire<\/strong>! Par exemple, ma copine aime bien la for\u00eat noire<\/strong> (For example, my girlfriend likes Black Forest cake). De plus<\/strong> (what’s more) the Happy Birthday<\/em> message isn’t always written across the cake in icing. Joyeux anniversaire<\/em> will often be neatly placed on a chocolate square \u00e0 la place<\/strong> (instead).<\/p>\n
