One thing that always helps is reading <em>les journaux<\/em> (newspapers) in French. Yes, the language used in newspapers can be more difficult, but I find that it is easier to grasp the gist of <em>un article<\/em> (an article), too. If you know <em>les titres<\/em> (the headlines)\u00a0in English, you can read some of the major French headlines and know a bit of what is going on already. Using your prior knowledge, you can guess some of the vocabulary words\u00a0and, since these words are in context, you will more easily remember them.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the major headlines in French newspapers (such as Le Parisien and Le Monde) revolve around the Greek debt crisis, as do most of the headlines in European newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>The top of the Leparisien.fr page shows this headline: &#8220;EN DIRECT. Gr\u00e8ce : Hollande s&#8217;est entretenu avec le pr\u00e9sident grec Pavlopoulos.&#8221; One of the headlines on Lemonde.fr is the following: &#8220;En Gr\u00e8ce, trois sc\u00e9narios apr\u00e8s le non au r\u00e9f\u00e9rendum.&#8221; Can you guess the meaning of most of these words? Even with a more challenging verb, such as <em>s&#8217;entretenir<\/em>, you can guess that it probably means a talk or a meeting. And you would be right: <em>s&#8217;entretenir<\/em> means to converse, or to talk.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a more challenging headline, from Le Parisien, followed by a brief description (to see the whole article, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leparisien.fr\/economie\/grece-a-court-d-euros-le-gouvernement-emettrait-des-iou-une-monnaie-transitoire-06-07-2015-4922513.php\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Gr\u00e8ce : \u00e0 court d&#8217;euros, le gouvernement parle d&#8217;\u00e9mettre une monnaie transitoire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Si la Banque centrale europ\u00e9enne venait \u00e0 couper le robinet des liquidit\u00e9s, la Gr\u00e8ce pourrait bien \u00eatre oblig\u00e9e de cr\u00e9er une monnaie transitoire calqu\u00e9e sur le mod\u00e8le des IOU californiens. Un pari tr\u00e8s risqu\u00e9 pour certains, une mani\u00e8re d&#8217;att\u00e9nuer la casse sociale pour d&#8217;autres.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After you read this short headline and paragraph, try to pick out the words you don&#8217;t know and guess their meaning based on context. When you feel like you have a grasp on the meaning of this text, check out the vocabulary before.<\/p>\n<p>When reading in a foreign language, don&#8217;t worry about understanding every single word. The most important thing is that you can guess the meaning of the text based on context.
