Last week mon ordinateur \u00e9tait en panne<\/strong> (my computer was broken) and I had to go to le magasin d’informatique<\/strong> (the computer store). I was worried that mon vocabulaire d’informatique<\/strong> (my computer vocabulary) wasn’t good enough and that I wouldn’t be able to explain the problem. On top of that, with la canicule<\/strong><\/a>, it was so hot I just didn’t want to do anything!<\/p>\n

I knew some basic vocabulaire<\/strong>, and that was enough to let me know that I might not be able to say what I needed.<\/p>\n

Par exemple<\/strong> (for example), I wasn’t quite sure how to say:<\/p>\n

There seems to be a problem with the boot sector, and I’m afraid the hard drive has failed.<\/em><\/p>\n

I had to try if I wanted my computer fixed! I walked in and said:<\/p>\n

-Il me semble qu’il y a un probl\u00e8me avec le secteur boot et j’ai peur que le disque dur ait<\/a> \u00e9chou\u00e9.<\/p>\n

He understood! Although I quickly learned boot sector<\/em> is le secteur d’intialisation<\/strong> and not le secteur boot<\/em>. However his prognosis made my feelings of success short lived.<\/p>\n

-\u00c7a va prendre cinq jours au moins et si c’est le disque dur, \u00e7a va couter 500 \u20ac (cinq cents euros) pour le remplacer et l’installer, plus le co\u00fbt de main d\u2019\u0153uvre.<\/p>\n

It will take five days and if it’s the hard drive, it will cost \u20ac500 to replace it and install it, plus labor costs.<\/em><\/p>\n

I wasn’t prepared to pay \u20ac500, so I asked:<\/p>\n

-Est-ce que je peux le faire moi-m\u00eame ?<\/p>\n

-En fait, si vous voulez, utilisez une live DVD Linux et voir si les donn\u00e9es sont toujours l\u00e0. Alors vous allez savoir si le disque dur est en panne ou non.<\/p>\n

-C’est une bonne id\u00e9e !<\/p>\n

Can I do it myself?<\/em><\/p>\n

In fact, if you want to, use a Linux live DVD and see if the data is still there. Then you will know if the harddrive is broken or not.<\/em><\/p>\n

That’s a good idea!<\/em><\/p>\n

I bought un DVD<\/strong> and une fois \u00e0 la maison<\/strong> (once I was home), his idea worked! I could sauvegarder<\/strong> (backup, save) all my files and nothing was lost!<\/p>\n
