People quickly notice the difference in les horaires de travail<\/strong> (working hours) between the US and France. Even being aware of the holidays doesn’t always mean you’ll know how to faire le pont<\/a><\/strong> (make the bridge). Knowing when things will be ouvert<\/strong> (open) and ferm\u00e9<\/strong> (closed) is important no longer how long your stay.<\/p>\n

A mistake I made going into my first long weekend: faire les courses<\/strong> (grocery shopping) before the holiday. It was a tough few days finding whatever food I had leftover! De plus<\/strong> (what’s more), things being open 24 (vingt-quatre)<\/strong> sur 24<\/strong> (24 hours a day) doesn’t happen as often in France as in the US. I have wanted to faire les courses <\/strong>many times when it was too late and tout est ferm\u00e9<\/strong> (everything is closed).<\/p>\n

Par ailleurs<\/strong> (beyond that), being able to work on Sundays is a recent development. Until very recently c’\u00e9tait ill\u00e9gal<\/strong> (it was illegal)! Even though la change<\/strong> (the change) already happened, le pol\u00e9mique<\/strong> (the controversy) remains. I learned about it during one of my classes, and hearing something that strange made me blurt out:<\/p>\n

-Pourquoi c’\u00e9tait ill\u00e9gal de travailler le dimanche ?
\nWhy was it illegal to work on Sundays?<\/em><\/p>\n

The answer was all the more surprising:<\/p>\n

-Vous \u00eates trop am\u00e9ricain, vous ne pouvez pas comprendre.
\nYou are too American, you cannot understand.<\/em><\/p>\n

Shocked at such a response, I didn’t press the issue. Au d\u00e9but<\/strong> (at first), I couldn’t believe my teacher had said something so ridiculous to me. Years later I realize what they said was true. The idea of having such strict laws on when to work was too foreign to me.<\/p>\n

Maintenant<\/strong> (now) I can appreciate the special care given to les travailleurs<\/strong> (workers) and I quickly got used to shorter working hours and longer holidays.<\/p>\n

Ne vous inqui\u00e9tez pas<\/strong> (Don’t worry) ! En pratique <\/strong>(in practice), Even during the long holidays, restaurants will still be open and des petits \u00e9piceries aussi<\/strong> (little supermarkets too). Il y a<\/strong> (there are) more things open, bien s\u00fbr<\/strong>, in the big cities, but even in the smaller towns you’re sure to find a kebab shop or two!<\/p>\n

Just be sure to check le calendrier<\/strong> (the calender) and look for les horaires<\/strong> (the [working] hours) online if you can!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
